I hear this a lot because I listen to DragonForce, which apparently have no skill /shrug
Basically you just have to get used to it. If your coworker is insulting your band, that's something else. Take the time to explain that just because they don't like it doesn't mean that it is bad.

I can't see how someone can say a certian type of music is under rated or misunderstood, then go on to say that other styles are talentless. Pop music is not supposed to be complex. Its supposed to be sinple and fun. Metal is supposed to be heavy. Rap is all about the lyrics. Each stly of music needs to be respected for what it is. I play guitar, read guitarworld and go to concerts all the time. Most serious artists pull from all styles.
Check my last post there buddy.
I respect musicians even from genres I can't stand, such as rap.
The things I said were talentless are the ones that just so happen to be some of the most popular, and sell themselves out for what makes the most money. Like
This
and
This
which are a disgrace to real rappers out there.
Also I listed quite a few different genres of music I greatly respect.
I'm sorry, I thought your post was about how death metal takes a certian level of skill while others may not.
Now when I look at the popular music of today, I feel even more insulted. Rap songs that loop the same 2-step beat for 4.5 minutes, pop songs that consist of 4 different chords repeated over and over, and anything by Lady Gaga... There are no auto-tuners in metal, there are no computer generated beats looped endlessly, every member of a good metal band must be a master of their instrument.
Unlike a lot of popular music out today, extreme metal bands almost always write their own music. That includes the riffs, drums, solos, and lyrics. Writing your own music demonstrates another dimension of instrumental mastery and talent, as well as making the music more personal and less manufactured. (What's up Rebecca Black?)
I respect death metal even though I think the skill lies in speed and precision versus melody and complex arrangements. Playing the same power chord shape at 200 bpm all over the fret board is cool and sounds awesome when done right. But I also like david gilmore and all the slow bends and airy melodies. Now dont get me wrong, a lot of music is totally faked with no feeling. A lot of great musicians die pennyless. I just think that death metal appeals to only a select few. Be proud that you like it but don't condemn those that don't.

I stopped reading here when you started to insult other people's music, which dismissed your whole claim since you are implying other music takes no skill, which is exactly what you were insulted about when he said that to you.

I just want to make sure to say, since I wasn't that clear in my first post, I respect musicians even from genres I can't stand, such as rap. Mostly the lesser known guys that have true talent like Nas and Tech N9ne. I have tons of respect for those guys, and I don't really mind when things like that are playing, and I'll actually listen to the lyrics when they're
ACTUALLY SAYING SOMETHING
(I suggest listening to that story). The ones I was referencing in my post were ones like 50 cent and lil jon who just repeat catchy phrases or simple sentences over and over again. Then, in the non-chorus parts, they just string together sentences that rhyme, but have nothing to do with each other really.
I agree with what you guys are saying for the most part.
Also, Squish, I am a huge fan of classical violin as well. (If you said you were)

That would pertain more to black metal, death metal is pretty complex through and through (there are exceptions).
Example
- This is a song I'm trying to learn right now and it's killing me.

The music that I hear that really takes no "skill" is Pop, Rap, and (some) Screamo. Pop and Rap are obvious. The screamo that i've heard is just someone screaming lyrics while the rest of the instrumentalists just play fairly fast.
Any
type of music can be produced skilfully.
Can you rap an Eminem song without sounding like an idiot? Or can you rap
Young Black Male
by Tupac Shakur? Can you even write lyrics as good as they do? (He starts rapping in that link at 0:40)
I can respect that you may not
like
the genre, but dissing it for being talentless is simply narrow-mindedness.

Four chord song says hi
That was pretty cool...
But on topic, I have to agree word for word with everything xlandenex and IronGolem said. I too used to criticize people for the music they listened to...until I realized how pointless it was to keep trying. If people like something - they will listen to it, who are you to jump on the throat of any genre and deem it as crap, and say it doesn't take 'talent'? Now I, personally don't like pop, metal and I don't like most rap. However, there are artists in these genres that I not only like, but also have an incredible amount of respect for. Music is just like beauty; it is in the of the beholder, and I could link you any band, for example one of my favorites,
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
(BTW For people who wanna hear it, you should go to the transition @ 3:33 into Scar Tissue), and you can by all means call them garbage all you want, but that will not make me like them any less than I already do, because it is what I like and what makes ME happy. I believe all music takes talent to some degree, and to deny that and say that a genre doesn't take talent is pure ignorance.

Yeah, I grew up on RHCP, although I prefer their pre-1990 stuff. The post 1990 stuff is still good, and is what got me into them in the first place.

Speaking of guitarists...Can't wait til' this summer for the new album with Josh, although John will be missed. Also, the new Foo Fighters album is also pretty awesome. Sorry to derail the topic of this thread btw.
/back on topic.

John left?
Sorry I haven't really been following them closely since about 2005/6
And it's only a semi-derail, we're discussing bands/guitarists.
EDIT: oh and Josh Klinghoffer is a good guitarist :) John was clearly just another one to succumb to the guitarist curse though... I can't remember exactly how many they've had but it's well into double figures.

I've got a reasonably high respect for metal guitarists. I think that they're very skilled at playing a melody (if it can be called that - strings of individual notes, anyway) at a very rapid rate. I don't know if it's a limitation of the instrument, however, but I would contend that a world class violinist can do far more, however, that may be due to the fact that there is physically less distance to travel between notes.
I would actually be inclined to think it's easier to play fast on guitar. Not only are the strings a lot thinner (and therefore require less effort to depress), but they are closer to the fretboard as well. Particularly in purpose-built shred guitars, the "action" (distance between string and fretboard) is
tiny
.
Most
importantly though, guitars have metal frets, whereas violins only have drawn-on frets, meaning the violinist must correctly place their fretting finger to find the correct note. A guitarist does not have to concern himself with such accuracy as the metal fret does it for him.
Also /disagree about the frets being too far apart, as you can see in
this
video. (The sound is crap in this, as it's recorded in a bedroom, on a video camera, however it shows a close-up of the guitar which si what I really wanted to point out.) To hear the fully produced guitar solo, watch
this
video. In both, the solo starts at around 3:00, however in the case of the second video, I strongly encourage everyone in this thread to watch the entire video, because it is a beautiful and amazing piece of music.

I respect all types of music except for the popular crap thats played like on MTV and such. I just cannot stand it and if you gotta have a piece of equipment to auto-tune your voice because it isnt that good to start with either. I also find it funny when people put down techno or any type of genre with it and say how much they love lady gaga and stuff similar to her when uh...all that is is watered down techno. A great example on why pop today takes 0 skill, anyone can make a song just like any top 40 song in a few hours.
