Portal 2 - Short and sweet

Anyone else think the huge fuss people are making over Portal 2 is hilarious? I've been reading the news and trying to skim through the user reviews on Metacritic and it's pretty dumb.Really it's just people who are never happy. Whether they have impossible standards or are just unhappy people, you can expect the same people to consistantly complain about everything.
Also, I have to retract some of my statement from yesterday. Portal 2 does have level selection, but it's only by chapters of the storyline, you can't jump to specific chambers.Pretty much the same as Portal 1 though. They grouped the "levels" into like three chambers each, rather than letting you choose each individual one.

I know your pain. I got stuck a lot in the game. I can tell you this without ruining it for you:
The answer is simpler than you think.
At least it was for me. There were so many times I was trying to do some aerial-portal switching when I just had to aim in a different direction. T.T

Exactly, but I made it past all those places. I'm just stuck at 1 now. I hope my brain is fresher tomorrow, so I can try again.

I looked on Wikipedia and the plot actually seems decent
Wheatley -the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbest moron who ever lived

Heh... Yeah... Off-topic story:
Yesterday a Steam friend of mine was playing Portal 2 and we were talking about it. I know better than to spoil it for some but I messed around with him pretending to lead up to a spoiler.
Then I typed in (Harry Potter spoiler fyi, gotta cover my bases now):
Dumbledore dies.
As a funny spoiler. I mean, it's a well-known fact, right?
His response was "Dude wtf seriously? I'm still reading the series!"
Kinda felt bad :|

Just finished it. Great game, really funny, and good hard puzzles.
I got stuck for a few minutes on a couple of the last puzzles, but it turns out I was just making them more complicated than they needed to be. Took a small break and when I came back to it, I got it immediately.
This^^

Question for those who beat Portal 2:
Who is Carolina (Caroline, Carolyn, IDK I played without subtitles so I don't know the exact name)? GLaDOS starts repeating some things she says at one point, and at the end says she's her "only friend". I'm still confused on who she is.
Caroline was the assistant to Cave Johnson. She is who Glados is based off of. When Cave is dying he says he wants her to take over Aperture completely even if she doesn't want to. So what happened was that Glados was created with a bit of Caroline in her.

There is also a theory that apart from being Cave Johnson's pin-up secretary girl, and GlaDOS's conscience, Caroline was also his wife and Chell's mother. This is hinted at by hiding Chell's surname as in both games, and by the fact that one of the projects for "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" is made by Chell.
Also, when introducing Caroline, Cave Johnson says: "Sorry fellas - she's married. To Science". I think in this case Cave Johnson metaphorically means himself, as he's the leader and co-founder of Aperture Science.
As for the ending, Caroline being Chell's mother kinda fits in because once you beat the game, GlaDOS says she finds the bit of memory with her conscience (Caroline's personality) after the final events, and as you leave the facility, she tells you to leave. As you ride in the elevator, you see the turrets about to shoot you. This is GlaDOS's first intention - lie to you and kill you anyway. But it turns out that she failed to delete her conscience completely, as witnessed by the turrets behaviour. You could even argue that now the turrets carry Caroline's personality because of the song they sing - from Italian, the words refer to Chell as "bella bambina", which is "beatiful girl/child"
Chell's Potato Experiment
- note how ridiculously strongly the potato grew.
Cave Johnson's self-portrait
- note that under no circumstances you would put your secretary in the self-portrait. You would include direct family, however.

I'm going to tend to agree with Liquoid here.
Either way, Caroline is a/the base personality for GLaDOS. Liquoid's theory, while obviously never explicitly stated, is very plausible.

But the aerial portal changing is so much fun. T.T
Skree and I were co-oping and I'd set up infinite aerial faith plate loops every chance I got. Just ask him.

I really don't buy the "Chell's mother" theory. I haven't seen Chell's experiment in the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day thing, but there are a number of holes in that theory, the biggest one being that Cave Johnson was White, Caroline really
sounded
White (in that stereotypical 1950s/1960s Fallout kind of way), and yet Chell is Hispanic.
Another problem is that Cave Johnson died in 1976, and GLaDOS became self aware in 200-. So, assuming Chell was conceived the year Cave died, and that she's been in stasis the whole time, and using the smallest possible interpretation of 200-, 2000, Chell could not possibly be younger than 24. Now, 24 seems to fit her appearance, but remember, that's after a lot of assumptions. Cave was at least in his forties when he died, probably older, so if he had any children, they were probably not conceived in 1976, but earlier. On top of that, 200- could be any year from 2000 to 2009, which only adds to Chell's possible age if she were Cave's daughter. If she were Cave and Caroline's daughter, she would most likely be a decade or more older than she looks.
Okay, that was kinda rambly. Let's just say there are a lot of hoops you have to jump through in order to assume she's Cave and Caroline's daughter.
I got the impression that, rather than GLaDOS trying to kill us, but failing to completely delete her conscience, it was more along the lines of her really deleting her Caroline aspect (or at least the conscious part of it), but then her
still
feeling attached to us because we saved her life and were her favorite and most successful test subject.

Here's the problem I have with both of those theories. I don't buy that Chell is related to Caroline unless it's explicitly stated. There's not enough evidence there for me to believe.
First, Liquoid. You state in your post that Cave saying that Caroline is "married to Science" that she is with Cave. I don't think so. That metaphor is kinda weak for me. I don't think it as such because Cave never really was that into Science. I say that because he always refers to the "scientists" at Aperture as
"lab boys"
. If he was ever deeply engaged in Science, I think he'd have a lot more respect than to call them that. The way he talks about them in the game it sounds more to me that he is a businessman. I won't deny that Cave and Caroline ever got close but it is possible at the time that it was strictly a professional relationship that evolved as time went on.
For the second part, I believe (like Skree had mentioned) that Glados let Chell live because she became attached to her and had developed a conscience. Not because they are related. But it is possible that Caroline and Chell are related. The thing that stops me from believing fully is the tone of their skin and that of Cave. Though recessive genes can solve that issue, no?
Undoubtedly, Chell was at Aperture Science as a child but it's possible she was someone else's child.
Now, Skree. I know you crossed it out but at the beginning of the first Portal game, Chell had awoken. There's no indication of how long she was asleep but it was long enough that Aperture had fallen apart. In the Portal comic that takes place between the games, we saw that Chell was dragged away after defeating Glados. It turned out that she was in for a
long sleep
because of Lab rat trying to make sure she puts Glados down again. (Lab rat - That's what I'm calling him.)
So, he said that she was in for a long sleep. Obviously indicating that she will be put out for some time (I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence but I'm trying to set something up.) When she is awoken at the beginning of the 2nd game, I believe Wheatley mentions that she has been out for a few years. In that time, she looks about the same. It doesn't appear that she aged much.
Taking from that and tying the belief that Chell and Caroline are related, it's possible that she had been asleep for quite some time and that could fill in the timeline gap that made Chell and Caroline related implausible.
P.S. I love you avatar, Liquoid. Although no one except bad medics from the opposite team ubers a spy. :3

In my age thing, though, I counted the age negating effect of the stasis pod. I was assuming she could have been put in it before GLaDOS achieved sentience.

Liquoid
Skeeran, read the Lab Rat comic.
It is implied that Chell could very well be a clone of the original Chell
Also, regarding age, we don't even know when the events of Portal 1 happen, because you start out from a stasis bed. The Combine Overwiki users tend to think that GlaDOS comes alive and Portal 1 events come about during 200-, and Portal 2 happens about 20-30 years later.
And to further confuse us all, there's also a theory that the reason the comic shows a teddy bear near her stasis bed is because she was affected by the growth accelerator drug she used on her potato for the Bring Your Daughter To Work Day experiment.

Liquoid, I did read the Lab Rat comic.
And even supposing she were a clone of the original Chell (which
still
wouldn't make sense, considering her ethnicity), I don't think that exactly qualifies her as "Cave and Caroline's" daughter, and especially not GLaDOS' daughter.

Liquoid
I'm not saying any facts we're provided are proof for any of the ridiculous theories I listed in the post. But I sure do hope that Chell is Cave/Caroline's daughter.
