There are 2 sides of the spectrum. They are real / they are fake. For this very discussion, let's
assume that there is extraterrestrial life
. With that being said, here's what I feel:
Some aliens have a similar structural build to us if you google up the pictures. I am starting to think that these aliens, although they are from a different planet, has evolved similarly like us humans. Maybe these aliens are just as curious as us as to how this universe came to being. Putting religion aside, the proof of aliens to me, validates Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Their genetic mutation to become their own being was just the same as our genetic mutation becoming humans. Therefore, I can say that aliens, although from different planets are related to us genetically. Our planet earth is surprisingly a green planet, meaning that species that dwell in it were adapted to survive and reproduce. Their planet suggests that it wasn't so green like our earth. They have no hairs, no physical features that will promote the need to survive in the wild.
People may see aliens as a scary thing, but I personally find it amazing how there are other beings outside of the planet. (I'm still assuming they are real and not some hoax created by the government). On the flipped side of the coin, we could be attacked anytime by these extraterrestrial beings and I personally think we don't have the means to defend ourselves yet.
Again, under the assumption that these beings are real, I would want the government to spend some money on some sort of defense that could try to prevent such a disastrous invasion to come or at least communicate with them.
When you think about extraterrestrial life, what goes through your mind?
Let's also talk about Area 51. It seems like there is some big secret happening there that no one is supposed to know. Anyone care to share what happens there? Circus? /shrug
pulling this from wikipedia
UFO and other conspiracy theories concerning Area 51
Its secretive nature and undoubted connection to classified aircraft research, together with reports of unusual phenomena, have led Area 51 to become a focus of modern UFO and conspiracy theories. Some of the activities mentioned in such theories at Area 51 include:
* The storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft (including material supposedly recovered at Roswell), the study of their occupants (living and dead), and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology.
* Meetings or joint undertakings with extraterrestrials.
* The development of exotic energy weapons for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or other weapons programs.
* The development of means of weather control.
* The development of time travel and teleportation technology.
* The development of unusual and exotic propulsion systems related to the Aurora Program.
* Activities related to a supposed shadowy one world government or the Majestic 12 organization.
What do you think of this?

If even one in 10 billion planets supports life; there should be some form of extraterrestrial life. Maybe just a space-bug. Maybe something entirely different. However it may be so far out in the galaxy/universe that we may never encounter it. As we're struggling just to get people to Mars, i can see how it would take centuries either way.
Regarding Area 51: Meh. I doubt (actually i'm dismissing it completly) there is any form of extraterrestrial life och spacecrafts in Area 51. Personally i think it's just the subject of too much thought. Maybe they're experimenting with new technologies. Maybe it takes a Class 98 security clearance to get in. Maybe they have Elvis. Sure. But i doubt there's Alien life forms there.

I understand that all of my statements are all speculations with no backed up evidence. Hopefully this off topic channel isn't a place to give reasoning with sound proof and evidence, just something to talk about.
Would you believe that our common ancestor with the aliens was a piece of asteroid?

Do I think aliens exist? Most probably.
Do I think they've ever visited Earth? Hell no. Even if they could figure out some kind of magic way to get around the universal speed limit of just short of 299,792,458 meters per second, the universe is so big, they're never find us, and if they did, why would they keep silent?
To suggest that aliens have visited Earth or have ever had contact with humans requires a great many assumptions that run counter to what logic and science would suggest to us. So I don't think that it's very likely that they've ever been in contact with us.
But considering just how vast the universe is, the possibility that we are literally the only time life has ever formed in the entire universe seems extremely remote.

And we never will
If ET has spaceships that can travel lightyears with ease, humans will stand no chance. ET would be thousands of years more developed tecnological-wise than humans.
However, lets say tomorrow humans developed a spaceship that could get out of our Galaxy in a reasonable time (Say ~10 years). This would have them going into lightyears. This, apparently, would make them go back in time.
If this happened, why is there no recorded evidence of time-traveling-spacemen? Not saying that evidence is always necessary, but if we were to travel in lightyears, then spacemen would show up at some point.
I, however, have high hopes about us communicating with ET in the next 1000 years. Not that I'd know, because I'd be dead. So I'll look smug in my grave.

Well, first of all if you believe in aliens, where do you think the come from: A nearby planet? Another galaxy? A parallel universe? This is relevant to know why would they attack us.
On the flipped side of the coin, we could be attacked anytime by these extraterrestrial beings and I personally think we don't have the means to defend ourselves yet.
Why would they attack us? How do they know about us? If there is life out there, why does it have to be more evolved than us?
In my opinion, if there is life in our solar system, it won't be as evolved as we are (I'm talking about maybe microcells). If there is life in another galaxy, do they have the tecnology yet to travel around this universe? You know, science has made a rough calculation about how many stars like the Sun are and there are around 9000 millions, every one probably with it's own solar system. Unfortunately, every solar system is very very far from us (and far from each other). So, in my opinion, there are SO MANY solar systems out there, it would be difficult there is no life in at least 1 of them. But finding the way to travel between solar systems is not an idea I'm familiarized with.

I like Mass Effect's explanation of having these ancient transit hubs that only go to certain places, and all the alien races that have discovered them have made contact with each other. Without the relays, however, space travel is extremely slow and uneconomical (even with FTL travel), and so, like 99 percent of the galaxy actually remains unexplored. There could be thousands of other sentient races that don't have a Mass Relay in their system and will never make contact. Excellent game.
Of course, that's nothing but fiction.

In the beginning of the thread I said, "let's all assume that there is extraterrestrial life." The existence of aliens or not will be in another thread. I am still very skeptical of it's existence. On a personal level, 70% of me don't believe in aliens, and the other 30% thinks about it to kill time.
Where do I think they come from? I don't know. There's a high probability that they are from another solar system unless we can find proof of an "alien" base somewhere in our solar system..
Why would they attack us? We would never know that answer. I can list a few things off the back. protecting their race / species, in need of resources, killing everything they see, fear, research, fun, exploration, answers.
How do they know about us? They probably send "observers" to scout Earth like in Starcraft.
If there is life out there, why does it have to be more evolved than us? I guess you have a point. We have evolved to the current optimal level needed to live on this earth. I can guess that they are not more evolved than us, but I can say that their technology for traveling through space could and possibly be more sophisticated than ours. It was my mistake to include the difference of our evolution to their evolution in terms of technology and space.

Off-topic: At one point, one of our favorite Wowhead 'brains' blogged about what Area 51 really was. Speaking as the secret military facility guy*, he stated emphatically that Area 51 was a testing ground for nuclear-powered aircraft.
On-topic: Based on the concepts of probability and the number of planets in the universe, if even 1% of those planets are habitable (by Terra standards), then it's almost guaranteed that life exists there. Whether or not that life is 'conscious' in a way that we would recognize is indeterminate, as is the idea that they have the technological capacity to bridge the interstellar gaps and travel to Terra.
*If that doesn't tell you who it was, then don't ask me to explain it please. ;)

Prehaps our race is the most evovled in the entire cosmos, why do we have to lag behind?
Fair point.

Nope. I haven't seen this poster around lately, but I'm fairly sure that, like a dark phoenix rising from the ashes, he'll return at some point.

Fair point.
I think the argument goes something like this: If we assume that Terra has been visited by sentient life from other planets, under their own power, then they must be 'more evolved' (more technologically skilled) than we are, since we do not have the capacity to do the same.
So it's a hypothetical based on an assumption.
Of course, the whole concept of 'more evolved' is pretty murky as is. How do we define 'more evolved'? Technically, 'more evolved' would simply mean that they've undergone more genetic mutations that were reinforced due to environmental factors. A non-sentient creature could qualify.
If what we really mean by 'more evolved' is 'more intelligent'? Take a look at idiot savants: By our standards, they
appear
less intelligent, but they possess mental facilities that outstrip us in those particular areas. If we ever met another race, they could look mentally challenged by our standards, but it could just be that they are so much more intelligent than we are that we mistake our lack of capacity to comprehend for idiocy on their part.

It's a fair point, but I believe that because humans aren't capable of scouring the stars for lifeforms, ET has to come to us. And so is more evolved
