Just noticed the top-left link to the old DB is gone, and the old subdomain redirects to the main www subdomain. Temporary downtime or permanent removal? It's still sometimes helpful to gain infos about e.g. removed quests.

I'd like to know this as well. I often used the old database for stories set before Cataclysm.

Ditto this. I frequently used this to try and see if certain things had been seen post-Cataclysm and where they dropped pre-Cataclysm.

We decided to take it out because it received almost no visits and we are about to make a change that would have broken item/spell tooltips on it, and it would have taken a great deal of development time to avoid that.

Ooo...a change to the tooltip code?

It's just something we had to do for performance reasons, you shouldn't notice any differences.

Ah, that makes sense. I couldn't think of anything to actually change/add.

I have to admit, I do wish there'd been some warning about the removal. I've been compiling a huge list of things I was going to go through and check for when I had some spare time, and I would have *made* time if I'd known. It does seem like many of the items are still showing up at least in searches, so that's something.
I was so excited though when I had seen Wowhead was keeping an original database intact. It felt like at least something was keeping a complete snapshot of WoW as it was before the shattering. I understand that it probably would have been too much work to update, but I can't shake the feeling of disappointment I get when Blizzard removes something without warning people.

I would too love to see this archive back.
It was the only possible solutions to see how the game previously was, and I was almost using it daily as I am working on a university project that deals with MMO evolution.
Is there any chance to get this archive working? Can't you just run it off the old site code?

Same here. I often use this when I find items and can't figure out what they're for, since many are now obsolete but have been left in the game. Or when I come across NPCs with seemingly no purpose in game and/or with flavour text relating to old quests. This is a bummer; two thumbs down. :(
If Wowhead won't be supplying this data anymore, does anyone know of another place we can look up pre-Cata quest/NPC/item info?

I am very disappointed with this move. I don't think it was the right move. I'm sure you could have fixed things so you can have wowhead and old.wowhead working at the same time. This is a sad day indeed for the wowhead community.

We decided to take it out because it received almost no visits Probably 90% of the item/quest etc. pages receive almost no visits, likely even higher for the gargantuan spell section (
"66122 spells found"
) with oh so many NPC/trigger abilities that no one cares about.
No reason to drop those, though :)
For the tooltip part, I fail to see how old.wowhead.com would behave differently than ptr.wowhead.com

Different codebases from what I understand, PTR uses the same codebase as live but old used literally the old code from back then and anything we changed on the site now likely would break the old.wowhead.com site.
It comes down to do you want bugs fixed and new features for the live site or do you want a working old.wowhead? You can only have one and the answer is obvious we want our bugs fixed and new features.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##fewyn##DELIM##

Exactly, no reason to drop those because they don't cause problems. We removed
old.wowhead.com
because unfortunately we did have a reason =(

Which means someone else will have to preserve the historic WoW.
This cow is up for it. Anyone else?

To start off, I had stopped playing World of Warcraft for about two months covering the end of Wotlk and the beginning of Cata so I completely missed visiting the old database. That is my fault but I am still quite disappointed that I don't have the option of taking a stroll down memory lane now that the site is down.
I am very disappointed to see that the site was taken down but if you had to do it for an upcoming change, I can understand. However, I have not personally seen as much outgushing of gratitude from the community as when you decided to put it up.
That being said, what of TheOnyx's statement that it would NOT be taken down and if it was you would consider making it downloadable? (

)
Again, I understand that sometimes things change but a lot of people in this community would love to have a copy of that database for a myriad of reasons. Could you please help us?

That would be very nice. At least quests and NPCs (and maybe the associated comments) would be helpful to historic purposes.

Well, I for one just decided that I will build and provide and archive with "ancient" WoW content. Got most of the data, and started work today.
If anyone wants to join, email address is on my userpage.
