Blizzard is making all the classes the same for one reason. So that fewer people, Blizz engineers, can work on more classes. Tech support has already felt the hit. So with Blizzard's top engineers and designers going or gone, what does that mean for WoW. More than likely Blizzard didn't lose or fire their top people, more likely they moved them to a new project. Leaving WoW to the srubs that have no new ideas or thoughts. This is why all classes are looking more and more a like. This trend will continue until WoW dies.

Yeah, because you guys played when you HAD to stack shamans in Sunwell. That was fun and unique and all the other classes were glad that shamans were being stacked.

Also what Argentis said. Hardcore PvE/PvPers already roll certain races just for their racials. If you added racial talents you would have nothing but 90% of a class being the OP race.

I think the idea of racial talents would be pretty bad because races on the whole have done nothing but stick people into a class/race combo.
That said, it would be really cool if we could actually make racials mean something without ending up pigeonholed again. I liked the initial concept a lot, it just didn't work out in implementation terribly well.

I think, especially with all the new mechanics introduced in Cata, that the classes are all more unique than ever before. Sure, the buffs are somewhat homogenized so that you actually have options as to what classes you can take in a raid, but the feel of each class is drastically different.
As an example, someone else mentioned hunters' focus being similar to a rogue's energy. The hunter's focus is similar to a rogue's energy in that both have a max of 100 and regen automatically, but the similarities end there. The differences are certainly more prominent than the similarities, and the two classes are just as different now as they were pre-4.0. In addition, the hunter actually played very much like a retadin pre-4.0, using the same resource and watching cooldowns. I don't think you could argue the two classes play even remotely similarly now.

Spading. One of the top issues is spading.
To use a more recent example than Sunwell, were the hotfixes made to both the class and the fight because it was found that a priest's shield trivialized one of the mechanics in the Saurfang fight, which was the first big litmus test when ICC first opened its long-awaited doors.
By spading, I don't mean data spading, but attempting a body of strategies until one single methodology is proven to be The Best Path Forward. Everything beyond that is suboptimal until you out-gear the encounter.
Making PVE and PVP the same single game is another huge issue. Making classes diverse in their capabilities will automatically unbalance them in combinations against each other. let's face it <class b> really doesn't have a counter for the <name> ability of <class a> assuming a mutual very high level of playskill on both sides. You will have more mismatches the more specialized a class becomes.
Blizzard has maintained complete consistency in the latter part of WoW's life towards making
no
PVE content that is dependent upon or trivialized by a specific singular ability. When an unforeseen mechanic like Saurfang's PW:S is spaded by the community, it is hotfixed in a few short raid resets. This is the "bring the player not the class" mentality in execution. Having more and more unique abilities makes the likelihood of successful spading out The Best Path Forward become astronomically high.
And all players, from both sides of the argument, see the wealth of ability hotfixes that come out to balance one side of the game (again, PVP/PVE) or the other, even though said balances tend to have significant impact on the other side, which was functioning "as desired".

This
their class is lacking uniqueness
You know what? I think each class is quite unique still.
What isn't unique:
-Raid buffs: They are supplied by at least 2 or 3 classes based on specialization or is a baseline ability) <-- This is the big one
-Equipment: Some equipment is fit for one class, but in general gear is usable by more than one class or specialization. With reforging, the gear ratings are a bit less relevant, allowing for slightly more justified gear choices (i.e. gap closing between BiS pieces and slightly not so best in slot pieces).
-Ability mechanics: At least 3 classes have knockback, several can stun, and so on and so forth. However, there are some extremely unique abilities which I will point out below.
-Abilities are similar: Hymn of Hope and Tranquility? Shadow Bolt and Fireball (spam nukes)? Fel Armor and Inner Fire + Vampiric Embrace? The list goes on...I guess.
-Pets: Many classes have pets...I guess it counts in some sort of way.
What is unique:
-Abilities: Ring of Frost? Traps? Flare? Metamorph? Shapeshifting? Stealth (and Vanish)? Charge/Intercept/Heroic Leap? Death Grip? Divine Shield? Dispersion? Power Word Barrier? Feral Spirit? Earth Shield? These abilities and mechanics define the class and how we identify them.
-Some things that classes share are actually quite different: A hunter can fire from a range but has a minimum range, but other casters have no such restriction. Many classes have pets but the pets themselves are quite different based on class. Some are even specialization-specific. All melee may share the same issues of dealing with anti-melee mechanics, but they have abilities to deal with some (Cloak of Shadows, Intervene/Heroic Leap, Evasion, Survival Instincts, etc)
I could keep going on with this, but I do feel this fact of classes lacking uniqueness is quite unfounded. What I will agree with is that because it is difficult to balance a MMO, some classes are being left in the dust because of inferior raw performance (dps, healing, tanking) because other classes can provide most of what those classes being left behind can, but perform better. Nothing is perfect though...
