Sounds like the Scourge invasion of old Naxx... or the zombie invasion of, well, the same old Naxx.
And boy, how people %^&*!ed and moaned about them (both when they were in game and when they were removed, go figure).
That being said: Rift and Oblivion called, they want their idea back. *rude!*
... but honestly, if they did this, it would have to be something besides "ooooh, glowly demonic portal of doooooom opens up randomly here and evil minions pour out!" and more "Holy crap, the Defias in Westfall have gotten their @#$% together and are making their way towards Stormwind from the Deadmines entrance! TO ARMS!"
... though the second you put high level mobs in a low level zone, you'd get complaints... and if you only put high level mobs in the high level zones, you'd get complaints as well probably...
So hey, you'd have to have something where... I dunno, the mobs are level-less until tagged by a PC, and then they're changed to be approx. the tagging players level (non elite if solo, elite if in a group? super elite if the group has a high level? That'd be fancy...)
It would be complicated, hard to implement correctly, a vocal minority would STILL find something to complain about, and it would probably get repetitive/boring/grindy after a few weeks...
Overall: has potential, but probably not worth the effort in the end.

And the Elemental and Scourge invasions became nothing but a grind as well; both Scourge invasions ended up being nothing but zone grinds as people killed the Scourge porting in at the stones in the zones; if the pvp'ers weren't destroying everyone that got in their way.

I think Blizz recently mentioned they would like to do something like this but the game engine won't allow it. It's seven years old now, and without changing the architecture, they are unable to implement some of the dynamic events that other games are starting to implement. Watch for more ideas like this in their next MMO, hopefully not copied directly from the extremely boring Rift...

The idea of PvE invasions is interesting, I am not sure how the WoW populace would deal with raid content that was provided in competition mode. These wow guilds are used to getting raid level content all too themselves..
What happena if right after a whipe some other guild buffed up and went in and took the mob? Imagine the monkey sh_it fight that would ensue..

the little rift invasions that people are cockmongerling about so much is nothing short of a fad, it will get to the point where people will not care about them anymore because the fad has simply faded away. Plus they attack npc and crap to, that will get old quick if youre questing in that area and the quest hub is half wiped from the invasion.

Rift?
....Seriously?
Invaders idea seems fun :)
Seriously; that is something that happens in Rift.

I'm all for suggestions, but Blizzard doesn't seem willing to accept any at this time.
Well they have definitely listened to the players. I recall some player-related suggestions being implemented at points in time.
Who knows, they have to stop the threat of RIFT somehow. I have a feeling it's possible RIFT may leech WoW's playerbase (not kill it, just leech a large number of players) if WoW does nothing to improve playability at some point soon. If not RIFT, then eventually some other game will realize the downsides of WoW and take advantage of it, drawing more players.
We'll see. Maybe WoW will survive completely intact. It will survive for sure, but who knows how many players will be lost.
