what if instead of just one fight with deathwing at the end of the expansion, we had the next few patches (with raid content) have phases of deathwing in them (as side or end bosses), so we progressively weaken him (so to speak)
i think it would make raiding and players move involved with the story and actually provide a sense of progression (where previous expansions just sort of felt like "oh, i guess its time to kill illidan/arthas now)

Dang it. I was hoping someone would try to make a Deathwing encounter.
Speaking of that....

It would be an interesting thought, for sure. It would completely go against the basic encounter design of Blizzard. I like it.

it also makes him feel larger. with Illidan and Lich King, we just sort of had random raids that had little or nothing to do with him and then all of a sudden BAM time to kill him. They never felt like a threat, they never felt big like they should have.

That's a cool idea. However, remember with Lich King they did 'try' to do that, by having him around for random questlines to appear. It made him sort of annoying in my view--sort of a joke, like 'Why isn't he just killing me right now.' (And yes, I'm aware they explained why he didn't, but it still seemed anticlimactic.)
I'd like to see real fights like you mentioned versus just throwing him in more to build him up.
I would also like to see maybe an expansion where the final boss gets away--where he doesn't die. It would be interesting if things got bad in another expansion before they got ultimately better.

i feel like the last boss "getting away" would bring about 2 reactions
Utter Disappointment, everyone thinks blizzard is trolling
or
They think blizzard is trying to milk 2 expansions from 1 story.
and i agree about the lich king quests. He was just sort of there. it made for bad writing and made him seem like a saturday morning cartoon villain.
"Im so awesome and confident in everything i can do, surely your weak mind cannot fathom my awesomeness so i will let you life"
and then later
"oh no, my arrogance was my downfall!"

Just an idea, but I can't see Deathwing as the last boss of this expansion. We know that Deathwing is basically the lacky of N'zoth or some other Old God. I imagine the raid encounter with Deathwing would have him as the second to the last boss, in an attempt to protect his master. If we kill the Old God first, Deathwing may no longer be as insane. (Maybe there is a redemption story to be had there?).
No. We don't. Deathwing may or may not be working
with
one or more Old Gods, but that would be because the Old God's plans coincide somewhat with Deathwing's.

I think that if dragon soul talisman is destroyed, The only thing that keeps Deathwing alive is his massive plate armor. If you saw the video clip at the beginning of the Cataclysm, then you saw that massive dark iron nails were beaten inside him, So the armor will be really hard to take off.

The Dragon Soul? The Demon Soul as well you mean? That was already destroyed?

For a person who isn't in the know on lore his statement still retains validity, his armour is all thats holding him together since the power flowing through him is ripping him to pieces.
