I still think we're going to run into some kind of blockade from other sentient species at the edge of our solar system, to keep our madness from infecting the rest of the universe.
Alright, random tin foil hat comment aside; I don't really think we should be focusing on space when we have too many problems Earth side to deal with first.

OMG IT'S A GGG!
Where have you been?
progressive motion towards the commercialization of space flight?
I don't think that space flight should be commercialized, yet.
However, just by glancing over the Orion page, I don't see any issues that I might have with it. I rather like one of the objective's (sending astronauts to near earth objects).

Meh. You know my position on this.

I trust your waffles are in order.
Indeed, good sir.
I also like the direction of Orion, though I am sad to see that it is stalled in funding.
Aye, this is one point why I'm undecided on commercialization. When under the government alone, they can fall prey to anything plaguing the government, whereas in the private sector it would probably be less likely to do so.

I am of the opinion that we need Ansibles (or something similar) before it will be possible to explore very far into space.
This is often overlooked, but I agree.

Off topic: Space Drive.
On topic: I don't even understand how the premise of space travel (within or outside our solar system) could have any political effect other than trying to claim land for a country/put weapons on something . Can anyone come up with anything within our realm of reality? (no Vulcans >.>)
Colonization.
Also, they've found a planet that can support life 20 lightyears away from us.
Dunno where my friend found it, but it was some nasa site ore something. Could probably find it on google but I'm too lazy.

Do you believe it's possible that we as a race might find a singular goal like that?
The only thing we have to do to be able to perceive a singular goal as an entire race is to stop caring about our personal profit.
Which means we are screwed. But we can hope that Salarians find us one day, praise our ferocity, and teach us space traveling.

That is currently against international law, unless it has changed without my notice.

I live in Melbourne, Fl. I've lived in Florida most of my life. I remember as a 5 year old kid going out of my house in Jacksonville and seeing a shuttle lift off. It's been a part of my life ever since. It's one of the reasons I went to college to become an engineer. The fact that it's ending soon, it's odd. This is something that has been happening since before my birth. It's also difficult to see all the engineers getting laid off, I'm lucky that the company I work for is doing well despite the economy.
I work on the beach, so I walked out to see it go off, but there were too many clouds over the area, so I missed it. But I will take off to see the last one, going to try to see it on the NASA causway, which is the best viewing spot, if you can get tickets.
As far as the Orion program, it's dead. It was a poorly thought out plan and was underfunded from the get go, so even though it pains me to admit it, the president rightly pulled the plug on it. Though I am peeved he's cutting NASA funding after promising to Central Florida voters that NASA would get a funding increase.
While I don't have intimate knowledge of what the private firms are doing, what I've seen really gets me excited. Lockheed seems to have resurrected the X-33 project. Space-X is talking about upgrading the Falcon 9 for manned space flight. There company that makes the solid rocket boosters for the shuttle is working with, I believe it's a French firm, to build a manned rocket. There's too much money in space research for private firms to ignore.

Funden's right about this, more or less, there's some treaty everyone signed, but international law and treaties are only valid if countries want it to be.
