some are downright rude (either that or they lack the capacity for normal social interaction).
Most jerks who acts like this are kids. What worries me is that kids like this basicly LIVE through their computer, with no intrest of having any interaction to the rest of the "real" world. With noone to teach them how grown-ups talk and interact with eachother, many will keep acting like jerks, keep thinking they are clever when trolling, keep flaming people "for the fun of it", and keep lowering the social standard of the net. It scares me really, I got a 20 year old relative who acts like hes 14, spamming chatrooms etc... "noone knows its me anyway!"-bull... sigh...
Now, I am only a woman (:-p) ...
Nice, the female gaming-population of WoW seems to be growing. About 25% of my guild are women. Sweet, keep recruiting.

Been watching this thread...been there/done that with these kinds of threads.
But I do want to comment on the point of people saying that's just the way it is or get used to it there is nothing you can do.
Bull@#$%...everything in life/internet is what you/I/we make of it.
In my guild every male no matter what the age, had to be polite and courtesy when the women were present.
If they wanted to have a trash talking session they had to take to another vent channel and keep it off the guild chat.
I almost never had any problems with the young people in my guild and on the occasion that I did, I'd have a conversation with them explaining why I had these rules and for the most part they understood.
The one thing I never did was talk down to young players or try to act as their parents.
I presented myself as a person of authority and mentor. They quickly learned never to call me "dude" :P
You would be surprised on how gracious and giving many of them became once they were shown the way.
I had one particular 14yr old who was a little troublesome at first, but I didn't give up on him.
The guild as a whole gave freely to him as was our custom. One day in ICC a particular weapon dropped that he was looking for. A younger person in the pug was also cooing over it. He graciously gave it to him. Some of the guild members teased him for giving it up to a total stranger. He whispered me if he had done the right thing. I simply spoke the old adage "what go goes around ...comes around" Within the next few raids, he acquired 3 better pieces including a better weapon. One day soon after he whispered me "thanks". I just sent back a smile.
He understood(much like the Grinch) that there is something just a little bit more, someone just had to show him.
I see a lot of 18 and over guild policies out there. Well what do you think is going to happen out there if young players only guild among themselves.
The young people playing will do as they see and/or allowed. If trash talk and rudeness makes them fit in that's what they will do.
I remember watching an animal show where teen bull elephants were ganging up and killing rhinos. The officials had never seen such behavior, they soon realized that poaching had kill off all the adult bulls. As with any species, with no adult to keep them in line, the teens started to act like punks. They shipped in some Mature bulls and the problem immediately stopped.
Point is, there are many adults playing this game. Take charge within your guild and ultimately within the game. Show the benefits of being respectful.
If some young person in your guild is behaving out of line, don't sit idly by..say something. If they say your not my parent, you just say your not my child either, but your still going to stop otherwise put your parents on and repeat in front of them the comments you just made and I will leave you alone. I usually received no response for that one :).
Respect is universal. Show it, give it and get it.
PS. Aestu is right that a person is inside the game what they are outside the game, just not as forthright because of the immediate consequences. You don't pick and choose when you want to be respectful. You either are or you aren't.

Now, I am only a woman (:-p), therefor I couldn't possibly comment on male-to-male conversation, which is usually a debate on who's pauldrons are biggest and who is the King of the universe in WoW terms
It was quite a good post until this moronic sentence. Ironically, after posting something as offensive and stupid as this, you immediately asked for people to have manners...

I think maybe a little irony can be accepted.
I simply quit groups and refuse to play with jerks as soon as they show their ugly heads, and I'm sure to let them know why. I'm too proud to try and get along with obvious social retards and they don't get to waste my time. There are enough nice people to play with.
I'd like to think I'm helping people see the consequences of bad behaviour this way. It goes beyond just WoW or even the internet.

Query - are the RPG servers better? I would think that this is a bit of a more self regulating community. So unless one is ROLE PLAYING a jerk with bad text grammer ;-) it would seem that the community would lead to some self creating norms (or could).
This is purely anecdotal evidence, so take it with several heaping spoonfuls of salt.
I began to seriously play WoW in Ravenholdt (RP-PVP), and I don't think much of the community. But after a while, I dabbled a bit in Oceanic PVP servers, and holy cow - within a few minutes of being in Trade chat there, my Ignore list is already full. I am currently in another RP-PVP server (Venture Co.), and I am proud to say that it's a (
relatively
) civilized realm. At least Horde side - we all know Alliance are honourless, backstabbing scum
.
My view is that those who cared to RP will usually police themselves, and others, to ensure minimum standards of RP-ness in the place.

Personally, I never speak rudely on WoW, even when trying to get a point across.
But really, is there any reason to flaunt your sex so much? For example, you mentioned about three or four times you were a female. Was that really necessary? Most of the time, if anything irks me, it's if a female feels the need to display her gender to everyone. My girlfriend never tells anyone her gender online, and we never seem to run into anyone displaying sexist manners.

I think maybe a little irony can be accepted....social retards and they don't get to waste my time.
Actually this is pretty ironic as well ;-) One thing that gets my dander up in WoW trade chat is the use of terms that we really would probably self regulate in real life. The homophobia is extreme but the use of hateful terms like above is also pretty common. Skrofler - do you think that people born with a developmental challenge WISHED for that to be the case? ;-)
Actually, the use of the term is a valid one.
(From dictionary.com) re·tard:
–verb (used with object)
1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.
People who behave in an excessively juvenile and crude way are not maturing socially/emotionally at the same rate as their peers. Thus, their developmental progress has been delayed.
@OP:
Yeah, there are people out there who are going to be jerks. I've been lucky and only had to deal with sexual remarks once, which was in a PUG dungeon on my human priest. I did not tell anyone my gender, they started making comments because of an unfortunate combination of armor (
Black Mageweave Leggings
and a vest).
/ignore is a blessing. And if the group is really being that much of a problem, just leave. You can quest for 15 minutes and then find another group.
I do not think the ratio of jerks is as high as some people think. But I am on an RP server now and it does seem to be slightly more friendly over-all than the PvE server I was on before.

This kind of behavior is the inevitable result when anonymity meets lack of accountability.
The "Internet Wad Theory" is a myth. People do not magically change when they log onto WoW or the Internet; they are the same people in real life they are in WoW; they are merely controlled by social pressure and authority and prevented from acting out their negative impulses.
In the case of WoW, Blizzard has gone to great lengths to deliberately remove these social pressures - this is why "naming and blaming" is actionable and there is a cooldown on vote kicks and being vote kicked, why name changes are cheap and why there is no enduring public record of player activity as there is in EvE.
In Vanilla/TBC, name-and-blame and ninja threads were common - and now they are actionable. Blizzard chose to bring the hammer down on such things because they decided that allowing individual players to behave as they please, for fear they might cancel account due to ostracism, is more important than allowing the community to self-regulate.
Nor does this antisocial behavior have anything to do with WoW's sheer population. eBay's population is many, many orders of magnitude greater and community behavior is carefully regulated by administration vigilance and a feedback system. Then again, if you're a !@#$%^ or child, you won't stick around eBay very long - but that is a tradeoff eBay is willing to make to ensure a positive community and the viability of their business in the long run.
Report them to the GMs. (Repeated) harassment will get them suspended & eventually banned from the game.
False.
If you believe this to be true, show me documentary proof of someone actually being permabanned for harassment. Until then...it's just a piece of corporate BS that's a cheaper alternative to actually doing something about the problem.I was suspended for 3 hours back in early 2010 for getting mad at some Trolls in trade chat and calling them some inappropriate words. It may not be a ban but it does show the WoW GM's do punish people for breaking the rules.

Do they speak to people like this in 'real life'?
Some of them probably do because they think it's "cool." Also, it's not just WoW, it's the Greater ****wad Theory of the Internet.

This reminds me of an old riddle. I can't remember the exact wording but it goes something like this:
Q: Is it better to give a cloak of invisibility to a just man or an unjust man?
A: You should give it to neither, because as soon as the just man puts on the cloak, he will become unjust. Insert extra rambling on about why this is true - you get the idea (I hope).
