In order to play, you will need both CD keys and a battle.net account.
The latter is free; the former though, requires you to fork out serious amount of dough (I remember a few months ago when they're selling WoW, BC and WOTLK for USD20 - no doubt now the price has bounced back to its original number)
If your friend gave you his WoW installation CD, that is convenient, but you still need valid CD keys - which can only be obtained by buying the game.

Ok so to be sure i have understand, even if he give me his cd, and i have the cd key of his cd, i still cant play?
Yes, you still cannot play (beyond the 10-day trial version), because the CD key is permanently bound to your friend's account. In fact, the CD itself is not important - you can download the client off from Blizzard.
That's what happened to me - I started during the WOTLK days, but I just bought WoW + BC. First time set up, the updater downloaded gigabytes of data from Blizzard, which puzzled me. A month later, when I upgraded to WOTLK, all I do is enter the CD key in the battle.net website - and there's absolutely nothing that I have to install. All this time I already have WoW + BC + WOTLK, but I can't play WOTLK until I "activated" it by entering the CD key.
