It's a matter of what you want to happen to you and how you to come to that happening.
Arcane's micro management is pretty easy to deal with but it's rotation arguably is the simplest. You manage evo, mana gems, mana potions, and use arcane power to burn extra mana. The sad thing that it's the not the only spec that manages multiple CDs consistently and it has about the same amount of CDs as other specs if not slightly more by 1 or 2. Mobility is strange. You can move quickly due to improved blink but when consistent short movements are needed the spec feels out of place.
Fire is very frustrating without decent gear I can imagine but I don't think that's the problem the OP is having with enjoying fire. When you have bad RNG there is very very little engagement. Even less then arcane you can argue. using combustion is pretty thought provoking but requires very good RNG to help you get a good ignite and it has to sometimes be at an ideal time. AOEing mainly consists of blastwave, flame strike, and living bomb which can be done in about 3-4 GCDs, less with an impact "proc" up.
Frost is pretty complex, supper engaging, thought prevoking, and fun for pve but even when played perfectly with ideal RNG frost still does less then the bad 4 button elemental shaman player. Blizzard has been unjustifiably nerfed into oblivion along with all of frost's already supper dynamic AOE rotation. The changes to frost are frustrating to watch. The train wreck of an attempt blizzard is making to limit Frost's pvp burst and buff it's pve consistent dmg is laughable. How does nerfing Deep freeze by 20% help stop pvp burst and help their much needed pve dmg in anyway?
Shamans of all specs are all in the crapper right now for any end game heroric raiding, so arcane and fire mages are getting into raids for time warp.
A mage can be fun to play, and in general the best part about playing a mage to me is the class's amazing ability to adapt to a situation in order to survive and be comfortable. But that's just it, you have to be in a comfortable state to do reliable dps. If you lack time to be stationary or if you lack procs you dps suffers and you either get lucky or get screwed. You are at the mercy of external factors more so then most classes. Sometimes you can get very very lucky and the benefits for taking advantage of that can be very exciting. It feels like it's induced rather then obtained though, kinda like going to a casino, you can't really do much but alot can happen to you.
A warlock doesn't hope for their chaos bolt to be off CD or for their corruption to spread or for their hand of guldan to root a person. Sure there are procs like molten core, eradication, and empowered imp, and you dps will suffer if you have bad RNG but you still have a very engaging rotation to deal with that carries the idea of varied spells being interchanged.
There is a sense of hyperdrive you can put yourself in when you want to go all out on a warlock. Poping soulburn more effectively, multidotting more quickly, paying more attention to your pet abilities, timing your dots more precisely, changing your rotation for the execute phase etc. You can't really go into a hyperdrive with a mage when it comes to killing stuff with the exception of skillfully spell stealing one buff oooooh.
A mage can survive a thousand more things then a lock though. A truly good mage can never die in any spec. Between Dragon's fire, counter spell, slow, ice barrier, blastwave, invisibility etc.;
when a mage wants to live he will freaken live
. A mage will stop/avoid/out manouver any attack any onslaught and you know it.
When I think of a traditional magician I think about that silly british guy with a bag of goofy tricks, that guy who will always slip past your fingers with an adorable douchbaggy smile. To all of those mages who lose to locks in dps charts. Survive to the raid wipes to dance on their faces while you can.
PS: top hats increase your dps by 9001%

No reason you can't play both. I am actively raiding with my Mage and DK.
Mage I do 25's with my guild and DK I use in 10's with my friends.
Regardless to what anyone says, 10's is a thousand times easier then 25's. That might change in Heroic modes but in Normals 10s are a cake walk
.
Uhh yeah, HMs are pretty much tuned for 25m so it changes completely.

I'm not sure I'd agree about that. I did a couple of fights in both 10 and 25, and in most cases, if a couple of dps died in 10 mans, it was a guaranteed wipe. In 25 man, we had more than half the raid die, and still manage to down the boss. :)

I suppose your right.
I love both classes, especially demonology warlocks and fire mages.
It's not too hard to focus on more then one toon at a time.
Granted, help from guildies would be best since it's two dps classes we're talking about.

Congratulations on deciding to play a warlock over a mage...that is step in the right direction, and and sets the stage for an entire tier of skill advancement.
I'm sure you will find our forums here, at MMO-Champion and EJ very helpful and constructive. :)
