Me and my friend is at about 2k rating, and we just lost against a team that had a level 73 Warlock. Can this happen, has blizzard changed the 70 arena mechanics, or was it just a bug?

That ain't supposed to happen as far as I know.

Perhaps they have changed the mechanics. In my 70 capped guild, a lot of the members are seeing 74's pop into arena queues every now and then.

It's a bug. If you join an arena team at 70, it lets you level up to 74 without kicking you.

74, new twink level?
Never. You lose roughly half your resilience, haste, crit, and other ratings by going to 74.
Only benefits are class abilities and chance to be hit.

And unnaffected stats (base stats) go higher, and access to higher items (Engineering level 80 googles (require 72) are an example); you gain pure stats to lose on resil, crit, haste and hit (%, but the overlevelling will actually make you need a lot less hit, so that's out). I don't see why anyone would create a 74 twink for this purpose, blizzard will obviously fix it soon... but hey.

The battleground brackets apply to arenas as well. So 70s will face teams with people from 70-74. I've met a few of them. But, as already stated, it's not better.
