After taking some time off due to RL I'm thinking of getting back into WoW. Since Pally tanks seem to be a dime a dozen and, therefore, in very low demand for most guilds that are raiding or plan to raid I'm toying with the idea of making my DK a tank. I actually have a tank spec just very little in the way of tanking gear so I keep him as DPS (Unholy).
Anyways, I have never tried tanking on a DK before, but I have on a Pally and a Warrior (Warrior up to 76 before I got bored of dealing with Northrend yet again). Given the difficult nature of Cata dungeons and what seems to be the continued selfish PUG mentality, I'm not sure I want to enter the world of tanking by just getting some Hardened Obsidium gear to fill in the gaps where I don't have quest tanking gear and queuing up as a tank in the Dungeon Finder. Given the typical attitude of the average PUGger zoning in and saying "Bear with me I am learning to tank on my DK" would probably result in everyone dropping or kicking me.
Any suggestions for learning how to DK tank without being subject to the horrors of Pugs that will roll their eyes at another "noob DK tank" and be unwilling to give any chances to see? My old guild on the DK has long since removed him for inactivity so he's unguilded at the moment, so a guild run isn't an option until I can find a new one to join. He's currently almost level 83 but if I'm going to tank on him I want to start BEFORE I can just jump into Heroics (or worse, Raids) so I'll have some idea of what I'm doing when the time comes... I've read the guides and watched videos of DKs tanking dungeons, but that's not a valid replacement for trying it out myself.

Well that's the thing, IS the best way to go about it just queuing up and trying to tank? I'm not sure what I'm having trouble with since I haven't done it yet, mainly because I'm more than a bit afraid to deal with puggers that have no patience and will laugh/flame/kick me for saying I've not tanked on the DK and am giving it a shot.
I would think because most people in the non-heroic LFG are alts they'd have even less patience, going back to the Wrath days where its a quick run or "grup failz bai" kinda mentality.
Guess I just have to man up and give it a shot :D

Read the tanking sticky at the top. Most (though not all) of the advice there holds true for lower levels. The basics are there and you should at least soak those in.
Go hit a dummy and practice the flow of runes and abilities and try to weave in some CDs for "oh @#$%" moments. Get used to the keybind and make sure that everything is actually present. This shouldn't take any more than 5 or 10 minutes.
From personal experience, going from my Unholy spec to my Blood spec is a huge shock to me due to the AGONIZINGLY slow rate Runes regen due to the loss of my Haste on my DPS gear. This, for me, was the biggest thing to get used to.
When you feel acclimated, hit up a random or two on normal to get the hang of it, then dive into Heroics.
