You're right in that you shouldn't be DSing until you've taken some hits, so you'll heal more and thus you're Blood Shield will be bigger. Make sure the first shield falls off before you put up the second.

Heroics are a whole different ball game, but truly aren't too bad once you get the hang of them. (running them with a guild group helps a whole bunch too)
Since DKs rely more on avoidance and mastery for mitigation rather than straight up armor and block (like Paladins and Warriors), we will always take more damage than other tanks will; this is a fact you must come to terms with. (It took me a while too) - This is why we have Death Strike and Mastery. It helps out healers a TON if you time a DS after taking a bunch of damage.
Also, keep up Icy Touch and Scarlet Fever on all targets, since one slows enemy attack speed and the other reduces physical damage from each enemy effected. In a trash pull, if you start out with Bone Shield up, get IT and BB on all targets (via Pestilence), and also pop a DS after the initial burst of Damage, you would be surprised at how much damage is avoided.
Don't be afraid to pop Vampiric Blood often, it has a short cooldown and helps out a ton. Use Rune Tap after you pop Vampiric Blood.
Cheers!

In Grim Batol, there are 3 pulls I'm positively scary squishy (some low health / high damage adds get summoned, warrior tanks can do a short stun to be safe from them, I've got to pop a lot of cooldowns).
There are so many ways to cc those mobs it's not eve funny. Just as an example, a Destro Lock's Shadowfury, instant cast stun. A Tauren's War Stomp, another instant cast stun. The list goes on.

If your group failed CC in Stonecore before Corboros, just run off earth elementals. When they cast Dust Storm or however theat AoE called, they don't move even an inch, sitting there safe and pretty.
When they stop toying with air shaking and run to you (you DO have aggro on them, DO YOU?), just finish them.
