Hello!
I always really wanted to try more pvping with shammy but I seen many post about how the shammys dont preform so good for bgs.
So, I am asking you guys if you can state how the different shammy speccs do in pvp now in 4.0.1. Just to help to convince me to give shammy pvp a shot.
Overall viability?
Pros?
Cons?
Cheers!

been trying my hand at enhancement PvP, and I gotta say it's pretty frustrating experience. while I definitely have my moments, often times I fine myself stunned/rooted/snared and bursted down with ease. other classes seem to be able to shrug off the worst of your attacks with relative ease. stoneclaw + wolves + rage barely let me stand toe to toe with melee classes, and ranged classes always seem to have just one more trick up their sleeve to get away from you than you have tricks to keep them close to you. it takes quite a bit of skill to do what other classes can do pretty easily. that being said, enahncement can still be loads of fun, I just got done basically going apesh** and defending GM 3v1, flying around with spirit walk + ghostwolf and hacking people to pieces. I'm also not the greatest of pvpers, so take what i say with a grain of salt

Enhancement perspective.
First of all, a shield is your friend. There's no shame in putting your off-hand aside and equipping a shield against certain classes. If your philosophy is to Stormstrike everything and hope for Windfury procs, that, unfortunately, makes Shamans not viable for PvPing. If, however, you know how to use the instant Ghost Wolf, use Shields, step back and kite a bit for healing, etc, they are fine. Also, remember that Wolves have a stun ability (you don't want that on autocast) and a movement boost that also removes snares.
So, in my opinion, Enhancement shamans are a ^&*!load of fun in BGs.

I don't play as those specs, but my thoughts (again, from someone who doesn't actually plays them):
Ele is ok. He has that insane burst he's know for, but in my opinion it lacks good survivability options. Aside from Thunderstorm, which is on a huge ass cooldown (PvP wise) doesn't provide enought room (20 yards), he has absolutely nothing to keep someone off him. He's also extremely immobile, without any spell that is instant or castable while moving (aside from shocks which are on a 6 seconds CD). So, in my opinion, while an Elemental Shaman can dish out respectable damage if left alone, he really pales behind the other casters, which have stuff like Demonic Circle, Fear, Blink, Frost Nova, Dispersion, Psychic Scream...you get the idea.
As for Resto, while being a healer means you're currently immortal with decent resilience, I feel he's the weakest of all healers, for pretty much the same reasons. Still, while you're not a ridiculous Holy Pally who can toss out 10k free heals every 6 seconds (trough Word of Glory) and wears Plate, you're pretty much garanteed to piss people off in BGs and have fun healing through 3-4 people attacking you.
I think most of these issues will fade at 85, once they get Spiritwalker's Grace and are able to go deep into Enhancement tree for instant Ghost Wolf, a mandatory PvP talent.

I play both Elemental and Resto, casually in BGs and duels. I can say that both specs are pretty viable right now.
- Elemental has a little extrabonus, compared to most other hybrid-classes atm, since we dont have to shapeshift or anything, to cast a heal - and with heals being super-OP atm., elemental is in a very good spot. If you plan to solo in BGs(or like duelling) I highly recommend elemental. High burst, lots of utility and good healing-ability. Resilience is a must, tho. With less than 1000 resi, you'll be very squishy(that goes for all classes, but im just saying it anyway). The downside to elemental, compared to pre 4.0.0, is that we dont have acces to instant ghostwolf, so our mobility is a little worse than it used to be. Good use of totems, thunderf#¤k, frost shock and purge can counter a lot of classes, but it takes a little training to get it right.
- Resto is really nice too. If you plan to play with a friend of two, who prefers playing a dps-class, resto is REALLY fun. Again, Ghostwolf is not an option at the moment, so mobility is a bit worse than pre-patch. But there is good news - and I do mean GOOD news - for restos: Cleanse spirit now removes magic(if talented in the resto-tree) and can be further talented to heal a little bit and have reduces manacost, which makes it amazing. Apart from that, resto suffers from really low dmg-output, as always, and thats why I dont recommend it, for going solo into BGs... and its not really fun duelling as resto either, seeing that noone can kill you, but you can't kill them either.
Hope that helps. Good luck! :)

Well, I can see the point you're making, but I don't agree with it. Equipping a shield itself is huge.
Maybe it's me just being stubborn, since I PvP'd with Shamans way back in BC when we didn't have Maelstrom and Shamanistic Rage was a poor excuse of a defensive CD, so I had no way other than having a shield to survive more than 2 seconds.
The main problem I see with "keep hitting" is that Maelstrom is random and you can always just step back and toss a 2-3 Maelstrom stacked Healing Surge. Don't scoff at the value of a shield. While it's true that we don't have any abilities attached to them, just slapping one on will probably double your armor value and physical damage mitigation (we're talking at least 20% more damage reduction here), not to mention the extra resil which might give you another 1-2% reduction. This coupled with your mail armor and Shamanistic Rage makes you quite sturdy. Heck, it's no news that shammies can actually tank stuff (I've seem one tank Anub'arak on ToC 25 on Youtube, back when ToC was the current content).
Of course you shouldn't slap a shield against a caster, but if you don't equip one and buy yourself time against Warriors, DKs and Rogues, I doubt you will last long.

I am resto shaman so:
Dueling doesnt make sense anymore. Warlock and priest will only burn your mana, they are unable to beat you. Other classes are only good to try how much HPS can you make. Nobody can kill you if you have decent gear and skills. And you have so low DPS than every class can heal much faster than you deal dmg.
Playing battlegrounds is awesome. My mate plays subtlety rogue since TBC so he is very skillful. Cleansing magic is biggest boost in resto tree. No more QQ about frost mages. If you can survive those insane dmg, you are able to kill them faster with your mate. Most funny are fire mages and warlocks. You can dispell anything they will put on you and even heal through this. Playing resto in BG is funny. Only odd things are more stuns and silences. This can be very confusing.
I dont know how it will goes with arenas... I think that some classes will be little easier. But I dont expect shaman will be much better in 2v2 that before. Nearly every class has some another stun in Cata or at least better self healing. Resto has only Hex which is... not good :-)

I play elemental.
Pros: really good burst damage, we are almost like we were on classic wow, we often kill a player in about 2 sec if you use
Elemental mastery
on right time and using earth shock as final blow, if player didn't die yet, then
hex
and burst damage again. We gained some good ways to control fight (for a class that had nothing), spend two points in
Earth's Grasp
are a must imo. And
thunderstorm
is just the thing will make you LOLOL many many times in AB and EotS.
Cons: the reality is, we are turrets. We must have to spend 2 points on
Ancestral Swiftness
for a minimum mobility. Maybe
Spiritwalker's Grace
changes that, but 10 sec is too few, if you get cc'd you wasted the cd. Our pvp set bonus is a joke, it should reduce Thunderstorm cd instead grounding totem. Rogues still slicing us like butter, warlocks are like raid mobs for us, shadow priests, feral druids, and warriors must be avoided 1x1. In Battlegrounds we play better behind other classes or stacked, it reduce the chance to people chose you to be a target.
That is my point of view, with my difficulties. Probably other players are better where i fail and those classes shouldn't be that hard for them.

I've done some warsong gulch in the 20s and 30s brackets since the 4.0.1 changeover. I was wondering about finding a decent shield, given my experience, and I'll definitely try this now.
My biggest problem has been with rogues, at these levels if they can get an initial sap in, I find my shaman is dead very shortly after it wears off--and warsong gulch seem to be full or rogues these days, even moreso than before the patch. Charging warriors have a similar effect (the stun is shorter, but not enough shorter that you can escape or heal before you die). A shield may make all the difference in these situations.
On the other hand, face-to-face, I find the enhance shaman does fine already. Make sure you have wind shear and grounding totem on convenient keybinds, of course, for getting through to casters. But our mobility, ability to slow others down, good burst when making a passing melee strike, and adequate healing seem to come together pretty effectively, when they can actually be used.
A quick word about healing, since half of attack power now helps spell power for enhance (as opposed to 30% and that only at higher levels), I find that, as a leveling shaman, healing surge is healing for a much larger proportion of HP than lesser healing wave ever did. If you can get away for four seconds, you can go from near dead to near full HP.
I rolled a Shaman about a week and a half ago. Currently I am at lvl 39, enhance. I am on a pvp server, so I am very concerned about making sure I got good gear, good professions etc.
I have to say this, this toon, at this lvl, is a killer. There is really not one class I have problems with. Of course usually this all changes when lvl 80 arrives.
Here are a couple of tips I might have for some that have issues with other classes.
1. I have chosen herbalism and engineering.
Herb, because of lifeblood. The heal is horrible, almost useless. I am at 166 herb and it heals me for 150ish which is useless imo. But, I love the haste option. That's also one of the reasons why I have chosen engineer. Besides the trinkets and other goodies, I am looking forward to get the glove haste enchant. That means, popping that enchant AND lifebloom (hope you can do that at the same time), which should do some nice damage.
I also make use of the engineer bombs and especially the mines and sheeps. Extra damage!
In addition, I have chosen Troll as my race, why?......Haste buff! 20 sec of increased attack speed!
I have not used a shield yet, don't really need one. I just make sure I have the right totems out.
I have a basic totem set up, SotE, Searing, Heal and WF totems, which I usually start with, if I need to run off and heal, I might pop EB totem. If I am standing around, of course I pop the magma for the Rogies.
Make sure you adjust totems during the fight.
Don't really have problems with Rogues. I do get sapped and ambushed but I usually recover nicely.
Here are some I think VERY important spells to make use of in certain abilities.
1. Make use of Ghostwolf as much as you can. I use this after I get sapped and ambushed a lot to get distance, I pop earthbind, pop Ghost W, run off, heal, run back to him/her, and then pop my 4 totem combo and start dishing out.
Warriors are not too hard, the charge stun does not last very long. I do the same routine sometimes as I do for Rogues, but usually it doesn't take long.
2. Use the crap out of Purge. Purge, purge! This is a life saver to dispell some real goodies.
3. Wind Shear! Use this ALL the time. This is a killer.
4. Make sure you dispell Curses if you have one on you (locks, priests)
5. Use the correct shocks for specific classes.
6. Always carry a health pot, and the highest bandage you can have. Even thought you can heal yourself, use FA.
Here is another great tip I got from a friend of mine who has a enhance Shammie. Create Chaos. I see a lot of Shamans fight on one spot. What I do is, I circle the other player (jumping around him in a circle) instead of just staying in front of him/her. Your opponent is not only busy using his spells, he/she also needs to worry about keeping up with you and turning to keep facing you. This method works amazingly with casters. It's like these Rogues that use their run buff before they attack you and run around you just stabbing you to kingdom come! I hate that lol.
I do have some nice BoA's on me, so I am sure that is a big factor in my success rate when it comes to fights.
Here is my armory, just in case:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Stormreaver&cn=Oakidoaki
Make sure you use everything in your arsenal you have. Don't just stand there and hit people. This class, in my opinion is a pretty challenging class to play. My main is a Shadow Priest which is a lot easier to play.
My opinion, you don't really need a shield. Maybe when you hit 80? Not sure about that.
I thought I'd share some of these things. I love this class. As of now, I am melting faces and enjoying it!
Anyway, hope any of this helps!
