If the tank doesn't rush, the dps will run ahead and ninjapull everything, while criticizing the tank for being slow.
Tanks go fast because these days, if you don't get to the mobs before the dps, you lose control of the whole situation very quickly. Rushing is preferable.
Fortunately, this will be fixed somewhat in the Cataclysm endgame...
I HOPE.

I agree with you.. but it's not just tanks. Everyone goes way too fast.. rush, rush, rush, rush. It's so much more enjoyable if it's fast but not frantic and chaotic.
I'm leveling a paladin tank. Yesterday, I got the Nexus.. I'm level 75 and have actual tank gear so yea, pure easy mode. I was chain pulling and never even paused until the mob pull right before the first boss (the mage). I paused because, as I always keep an eye on the healer, I noticed that she had stopped way down the hallway. The ret paladin? Pulled that group anyway.. and NOT in the way that I would have, I usually quickly LoS them to make it safer. Ok fine, whatever.. I picked up all the mobs, used word of glory on myself to keep my health up and we finished them. Healer still isn't here.. but the ret paladin didn't pause, just cast judgement on the boss and went on. That's when I said, "looks like you don't need a tank so see you later, gl". And maybe they really didn't, that's fine.. but I didn't want to play like that. I rolled a tank for a reason.
I could understand if I was going slow, but I wasn't. Or if I was pausing for no obvious reason.. but there's always a reason if I stop.
Same thing happened in one of those outland dungeons. I was on my mage.. guildie on his dk tank (a GOOD one.. :D). Had a shaman that would NOT stop pulling... the priest healer was screaming out to wait over and over again, but it didn't matter. The tank is much more patient than I and asked him many times to stop before he finally left.
And it's not just dps that pull either, healers do it too.
My point is, this isn't uncommon. Tanks either have to learn to go franticly fast so that they get there before the dps.. or make their job that much harder by not getting the initial aggro (and not being able to pull the way you want).. or take the dungeon cooldowns. Yea some people would just let dps die, and that's perfectly valid imo.. but I've tried.. I can't do it if I can prevent it.
It's an all around problem.

I agree with this. I've been playing my DK alt and running heroics to farm JPs. 90% of the time the tank is some ADHD idiot who just keeps going without stopping for the healer to get mana, or for us to loot, or anything. Being that my main is a tank, I find this ridiculous; when I tank, I pull at a decent pace but slow enough for people to loot and catch up. There have been a few times where the tank runs past and doesn't even notice a mob from behind, or runs far enough away (Warriors with those rocket boot things are especially guilty of this) that the mob goes to eat somebody else and they don't even notice until someone is dead or close to death.
I really hope Cata puts an end to these hyper people who think they MUST finish in 15 minutes or less and just keep pulling things nonstop.
What I've noticed more commonly is the "tank" is really a Fury Warrior who just carves up anything in their way. I had one the other night who not only was tanking as Fury with JP gear (had a few heroic blues still) but was also pulling close to 9k DPS the entire dungeon. It was insane.

I am a full believer in the "you pull it, you tank it" mentality whether I'm currently running as tank or dps. My balance set is much better than my tank set but I know how to watch my threat meter in both specs and keep the mobs on the player they're supposed to be on. If you're dps then switch focus once your threat starts to get too high. If you're tank then speed-mark skull via keybinds and make sure that mob doesn't get away from you. If that mob isn't a boss then there should be no reason that you'll lose agro on him if you have anywhere near decent gear as long as you stay focused on holding him. Obviously, attempt to aeo the others to hold them but it's not the tank's fault if he loses threat on a secondary mob if the dps focus it. Also, if a tank is cocky enough to get out of range of his healer then it's his fault if he dies from an overpull. If you think you can solo it then you should have run the dungeon by yourself. If you understand that you need others then actually work as a team.
And one last thing, if your tank/dps/healer really sucks then just add them to your ignore list. You'll never be grouped with them in a random again.

I agree with a lot of the comments here, and I do different things depending on the role I am fulfilling.
If I am dps (which is a rarity) - I wait till the tank pulls, and then start dps once he has a gcd or two on the mob. I more often than not set the tank as my focus and always know when he swaps is attention, if I get the "interface action blocked by addon (or whatever it says)" I then have the tank targeted when he pulls and then swap to his target as soon as he has threat.
If I am the tank - I ask the dps to give me a sec if they are antsy, and after one time telling them, I go into the "you pull it, you tank it" mentality. While leveling up the healers will more often than not heal the stupid dps that yank threat, and if it was a group that they initialized the pull, then I am stuck getting the agro off the healer (which is annoying). If they jump the gun and only get one, then congrats to them, they are now an OT and if the healer wants to keep them topped off, so be it.
If I am a healer - I let the tank pull, and I heal the tank. If the dps pull agro because they outgear/out threat the tank, I will heal them (usually). If the tank speed pulls while I am drinking I let him die as well. I let a tank die twice because I told him I was undergeared and he insisted on pulling 3-4 groups at once, and I couldn't keep up. After the run back he did the same thing, and I let him die again. If there is AoE I absolutely heal everyone. IF the dps pull agro because they attacked too early, it is a case sensitive ordeal - as in if this was the first and only time it happened, I may heal them - but usually ends up with them as OT minus the heals. If the dps pulls a group initially, they had better hope the tank picks up the agro, or they are going to die very quickly, and I also WILL NOT REZ THEM! They get something along the lines of "Are you the tank? No? Then you do not pull, enjoy the walk back."
Usually people work together great, but sometimes people need to learn the hard way that it is a group effort, and nobody can do it alone, no matter how "1337" they think they are.
In my opinion there is zero room for a first person shooter in a cooperative setting. There is a reason Blizz made it so you HAVE to have 1 healer, 1 tank, and 3 dps in any 5 person dungeon.

I just had a mage in Underbog. As a Warrior, I have more trouble the larger the groups get. But themage didn't seem to think I was fast enough while pulling and holding around ten mobs at a time. So when we reach the room just before the Hydra boss he pulls what seemed like fifty, if not more, mobs to us.
I barely manage to keep them while we all AoE them down and the Mage stands back and does nothing. We sit down to eat/drink and he complains about how we are too slow and rushes ahead. I barely had time to charge the next group before his Frostbolt hit them.
By far, the saddest part was looking at his horrible 100 DPS. He then called me a bad tank on the grounds I have no BoAs... which I have a full Plate set in my bank because I REALLY don't like BoAs after leveling a toon with them.
