I have a question about weapons. I know that in Wrath it was sometimes viable to tank with a polearm, but I assume that was at least partly because they had straight AP on them, which they don't any more.
But it still seems to me like given the right polearm (vs. the right current weapon) that they could be an upgrade.
For instance, I'm just starting to gear up my DK to tank, but I'm comparing
Oversized Oblique Ogre Obliterator and Seliza's Spear
. I had reforged the Crit on each to be Dodge (EJ has yet to decide on whether mastery or avoidance are better to focus on and says they're fairly close, so I've been experimenting with avoidance), but Seliza's gives me more overall avoidance (0.15% to be precise), plus 1.1 mastery.
It also has higher base damage, meaning even with the loss in AP, I've got a damage range of 3100-3805 vs. 2968-3615 with the sword. Given that my main threat comes from HS, DS and RS, which are all based on weapon damage, this seems like it ought to actually be a threat increase too.
Is the Polearm actually the better tanking weapon in this case? (And should the guide perhaps address this topic a bit? Or is it too much of a case-by-case kind of thing?)

I can't tell u the exact numbers, but the sword whit STR on it, should be better. Go always for weapons whit STR on them.
Yes, I'm aware that
generally
items with strength are going to be better. But that's not the question.
Aren't there specific cases where a certain polearm is better than a certain strength weapon even though they have agility?

Mastery > Haste.
Disregarding the agility and strength.
I'd go with the spear.

lol...looking at the topics...is Cata realy so boreing to the people, that they already started to play their alts (mostly DK alts) again? I can see mostly "help me readying the tooltips (OK, I know..I'm going to be old, but that's the base on all "help whit talent builds pls/help whit rotation pls, etc)" topics...I smell a lot of deathtards are comming back...:S I enjoyed the challenge on DK tanking so much, what made the mass turning away from the class...I don't want it again, that when I enter a dungeon, the healers are saying: "OMG DK tank /leave"...
People flock to whatever class they think is the best/easiest. Currently, in melee DPS, DKs are placing quite good with high survivability, thus easier. DK tanking is pretty good so it also draws those wanting any easier path.

Army of the Dead is such a bloody awesome tanking tool. Finally got my DK to 85 and loving it.

Hi, and thanks for the great guide!
I just wanne ask if its best to make dodge and parry as equal as possible? like 11 dodge 11 parry.
If so, wy would i do that?
And what will happen if i go for more, say parry? Like 14 parry 10 dodge.
It's that im trying to fidure out to use Stoneskin Gargoyl or Swordshattering.
Thanks for answers and the great guide!

You try to balance them before the use of any rune because you want the most effect for your enchant/gear/gems. Diminishing returns says that the more you have of something, the more you need to get a higher rating. Simply put, it takes more points of dodge to go from 1% dodge to 2% than it does to go from 2% to 3% and so on. Since both Dodge and Parry share the same level of diminishing returns, if you have 9% dodge and 10% parry, it takes less to get your dodge to 10% than it does to get your parry to 11% therefore it is more efficient to put points into whichever one is lower to get the most rating out of the points.
Going for more in one stat or the other is simply less efficient since it "wastes" points on a stat where you could get more rating for the same number of points.
This is before runeforges take effect since they are outside the curve. Don't consider the runeforge effects when balancing stats. Based on current mechanics, Swordshattering seems to provide the most benefit. This may change at any time they make a patch or gear levels rise to invalidate the current research.
