And here I just assumed Blizzard tossed some Beta keys at Wowhead and said, "distribute them however you want." Who knew the haikus were Blizzard's idea, and that they love them so much!
Such revelations, this truly is a wild conspiracy. I've lost very much faith in Blizzard this day, which will never be restored.
...
Too dramatic?

Or it could simply... you know, be a fun and different way of giving out the large amount of keys Wowhead has gotten, rather than giving it out
completely
at random?
Making a point of responding, and responding with no new information - merely a spin - proves my point.
... what? I'm suddenly a representative of Blizzard Entertainment? Cool. While I'd love to think that was the case, it's not even close to be realistic. I'm just a Moderator, that keeps the forums in order - that's all. I'm flattered though.
Beta keys are non-transferrable unless explicitly sanctioned to be transferrable by Blizzard on a case-by-case basis. Blizzard makes this choice based on what they believe is their own best interest. They want good PR.
This matters why, exactly? What are these examples of their PR, that I have yet to see in your posts (I might be blind, but if so, please point it out)?
If they wanted to issue the beta keys based on relevant, "non-random" criteria, they could look at demographics, system information, LFD karma, account history, etc. Giving them out on the basis of a haiku is randomness by other means - whether it's based off the system clock or a haiku, either way it's "random" in correlation to any potentially relevant variable.
Your entire argument seems to build on the fact that you sincerely think that Blizzard specifically told Wowhead
"Give out these X beta keys, by making a haiku-contest. Oh, and it should praise our game, nothing else. Chop chop."
. Honestly?
In my opinion, giving fan sites such as Wowhead here a chance to do something fun* and different, instead of every single WoW player sitting on their behinds, and spamming
on their Battle.Net-accounts until a wild beta suddenly appears.
Besides, as far as I understood it, Blizzard gave out keys to special someones at the first round of beta-invites - which was indeed based upon previous history and such. Granted, I havn't got a source for this, but that doesn't seem to be a problem with proving a point here.
Ah yes, and because I like to do posts like this:
Haiku competition is not PR.
+1 Gnub.

I'm still at 98 - there's a link in my profile for giving internets, should you actually choose to do it :P

So Aestu, why don't you summarize your side of this debate in 200 words or less? Go for the meat instead of the fluff, as all I'm seeing is fluff. Most of it also happens to be around the phrase "
Stop Having Fun Guys.

... what? I'm suddenly a representative of Blizzard Entertainment? Cool. While I'd love to think that was the case, it's not even close to be realistic. I'm just a Moderator, that keeps the forums in order - that's all. I'm flattered though.
Your response wasn't moderation - literally, moderating the discourse. Your response was your own opinion on the topic.
Yes, it's my own opinion. Besides being a moderator, I'm also an ordinary poster. As I wrote several times during my reply, it's my personal opinion - nothing else. Being a moderator however, is the closest I get to a representative position, which I was talking about there. My post is as an ordinary user of this forum.
And here you're strawmanning. I never claimed you were a Blizzard rep nor did I imply that. You're attempting to debunk my point - that Wowhead hosted a kitsch competition to boost Blizzard's PR - by mis-stating the argument. That's not moderation at all.
Again, I never stated I was moderating. I got the impression, seemingly wrong about what you were implying. That's fine.
Examples of PR? Actioning posters on their own forums who criticize company actions while tolerating out-and-out trolls who shill for them; using grey posters who are company employees to undermine critical discussions they don't like; threatening MMO Champion with an injunction so that the editor actioned forum posters that were critical of leaked and datamined beta information; and redoubling an advertising offensive while cutting back on game infrastructure spending.
Alright. Cheers for the elaboration. Not really relevant to what we're discussing, so I'll just let that go.
Your entire argument seems to build on the fact that you sincerely think that Blizzard specifically told Wowhead
"Give out these X beta keys, by making a haiku-contest. Oh, and it should praise our game, nothing else. Chop chop."
. Honestly?
You're strawmanning again. That's not the argument being made. Nor is this remark "moderation", it's you arguing the issue, with your own opinion, just like any other poster.
What was it then? Please note the "seems", that implied my doubt, not certainty of what your argument built upon. And, once again, I was indeed posting my opinion - not moderating.
In my opinion, giving fan sites such as Wowhead here a chance to do something fun* and different, instead of every single WoW player sitting on their behinds, and spamming
on their Battle.Net-accounts until a wild beta suddenly appears.
Again another strawman. You're also replying with a internet meme - demagoguery - and not a reasoned argument. Beta keys are only as "wild" as Blizzard chooses to make them. In the very post you replied to I outlined ways to make them less random.
Since when did anyone need arguments to back up opinion? Don't think I've ever heard of that. Opinions, as you should know, can never be proven right or wrong, let alone used in such contexts.
You're saying it's a choice between this contest and giving out the keys on a totally random basis. That's a false dichotomy and you know it.
What I'm saying is either something fun or giving them out in a randomly matter. What should the third option be?
Besides, as far as I understood it, Blizzard gave out keys to special someones at the first round of beta-invites - which was indeed based upon previous history and such. Granted, I havn't got a source for this, but that doesn't seem to be a problem with proving a point here.
We have a word for people like you.
We call them ignorant.
Isn't it a bit hypocritical to call someone ignorant when you're stating your own unsubstantiated inference as fact?
I like how you dodged the important part of what you quoted. Also, please state where I say any of it is 100% certain facts, and not opinion.
... I'm beginning to feel like a certain other user when doing silly multi-quoted responses like this one. Scary. I'm beginning to wonder if I got trolled hard or not.

so why is there a problem about blizz basically giving something away for free, that all it does is give you a preview of something that will be totally different from the finished product anyway?
