Today's section was surely better than the two previous. Only one haiku's syllable was actually wrong, in this case it was the one that was 4/7/6. Personally, I doubt mine will appear there, seeing as I only submitted two. There's always hope though. Grats to those who win today. :D

Did you really just point out all of those mistakes? O_o
Um......
Good luck for everyone today. :3
Also, did you know that they are making a Smurfs movie?
one can only assume that you are either: lazy, a moron, or a troll.
Harsh. :/

Congrats to all the potential winners! Personally, I like Oroleens the best because I play a rogue and I am amused whenever I pickpocket a steamy romance novel.
Also, voting to change the thread title to-
People Spergin' About Syllables

2 of the competitors have been removed from the voting—one for reason of miscounted syllables (my fault) and one for reason of being plagiarized. A shame, I rather liked them both...but what can you do?
We won't be replacing them in today's competition, but we WILL add 2 extra haiku to tomorrow's competition!
Are they changing the amount of keys given per day to 4 and 6 respectively to make it 50% of the # of haikus so the competition is fair?

I didn't get a thing. When I submit a Haiku, should I write a (TheNotorius) at the end of the Haiku, or the name of my account maybe? Or I don't need to (In the contest guide, it doesn't say anything about that) Oo
Thanks..

People need to relax on the syllables. Depending on which region you are from, it may vary. I was in a ridiculous argument earlier with some people on a forum about the word “FIRE”.
Now, southerners say fire as “FAR” or “FUR”. In that case, it is 1 syllable.
Most of us yanks say fire as “FIY-ER”. In this case, it is 2 syllables.
So, what’s the big deal? Some of these sources contradict themselves regarding syllables anyway.
I am not saying we should just ignore it, some certainly deserve scrutiny, but people need to chillax for realz.
For example... how would you classify HIGHER vs HIRE?

This makes me worry a little. I've always pronounced Vampire as two syllables, and did so on my Haiku. But I suppose it could be taken as three syllables also >.> I hope I don't get disqualified for it.

Wuut? I thought those who posted them elsewhere in other topics would not be considered! :O
Plant, wait, pluck, repeat / Wait, that's not how gold is farmed? / Crap. I'm such a noob. (parttimeaw)
Well, becuase of that I saw it in a post earlier, I voted for that one.
If they were posted elsewhere but NOT actually submitted into the official contest, they wouldn't be considered. I saw some of these posted in forums, or on Facebook and stuff, its fair game as long as they still entered them.
They were just giving people a taste I guess. =P

But to have them chose something that by definition is NOT a haiku - it's going to frustrate those who took their time and knew what they were doing.
Sez you. But allow a dead guy to retort:
芭蕉野分して盥に雨を聞く夜かな
That's from Matsuo Basho, unarguably the best-known haiku poet, and the syllable* count goes 8-7-5. Now can we please knock off the nonsense day after day about what is or isn't a
real
haiku? The judges have made it clear that 5-7-5 is a requirement of this particular contest. But that's as far as it goes - as with all poetry, the rules of haiku are nearly always followed but do not define the form.
*
Morae
, technically. It has eight of what haiku typically have five of, is the point.
You have a good point and I admit I kind of messed up what I was trying to get across. My main point was that, like you said, this specific contest's rules were 5-7-5 and I did relay as to be with all Haiku's which was my mistake. My point is people should be knit-picking these for the fact that there are rules to follow and people (
especially
) who make it to the 10 chosen should indeed follow the rules. That and the fact that English words do indeed have defined syllables and no matter how one might pronounce them doesn't define how many syllables they actually have.

Depends on the word. You can use "fire" as either one or two syllables, but you can't get away with "book" as two syllables or "capture" as one syllable (just random examples).

That's the sort of question you can find English majors arguing about in forums. But I think you'll find "higher" is considered to have two syllables and "hire" to have one. In casual speech they sound similar, but consider how each word is said by someone going out of their way to enunciate carefully (like over a very bad phone connection or whatever). I'd say in that case the difference in syllables comes out, but that's just me.
I dunno, I personally pronounce both of them as 2 syllables (I'm a New Yorker, if that makes a difference).
Like I said above, it depends on the word.
