Leaving a guild gracefully

I'm going to be leaving my guild shortly (I won't go into details why as I've mentioned it enough on my posts in the Dungeons & Raids section). Suffice to say I'm going to be server transferring to a better quality realm, and that's the reason for my leaving (as opposed to being offered a spot in a new guild on the same realm).
I don't know how to word this without it sounding like "You're all a bunch of baddies so I'm leaving this crap server", since in reality that
is
the reason I'm leaving. The RLs don't seem like the type who take criticism (it might just be that they all have harsh-sounding voices on Vent, if that makes sense at all) or who will take this news well; in fact the guild has a "tradition" of booting out anyone who says they're going to leave BEFORE they can type /gquit, and then booting out all of their alts as well.
I put it off for a few days to think about it, and was going to do it last night, but figured I'd sleep on it one more night to make sure it's what I want. There's just too much lack of overall communication and skill in this guild, and it's indicative of the entire server I'm on. One RL now is trying to form a "kill team" that will extend its Raid ID until it kills LK, and while I don't doubt that it will happen, I'm betting it will take months to do it because we still can't coordinate on easier things. We took our best players to RS10, people who had seen the fight personally up to P3, and we wiped the whole night shortly after P2 started. We took some of our top people to ICC10 and, despite one-shotting Plagueworks and beating them the previous week, spent three hours wiping on Blood Princes (and we were ON Blood Princes when we left the previous night i.e. zero progress) before giving up. So the road to an LK kill is going to be long and painful, probably more painful than forking over $25 and going to a server where the Pugs regularly get up to Sindy, if not LK and the player quality is better.
I'm just not sure how to say that I've had a good run (I'm one of their best tanks) but the server quality is bad and it's not giving me the WoW endgame experience I want without sounding like an elitist jerk who's telling the entire guild I'm better than they are.

Very easy, /gquit.
They don't care about you and won't care about you when you leave. Most people who play WoW only use you to get purples.
You're giving it too much thought.

If you are concerned about getting your farewell out before being /gkicked, make it a macro, including /gquit.
Then server transfer, and go enjoy the game. Life is fleeting, don't feel guilty for wanting the best play experience you can get in your limited playing time.

The guild has a "tradition" of booting out anyone who says they're going to leave BEFORE they can type /gquit, and then booting out all of their alts as well.
You could make a macro:
/g Hi all, I'm leaving, (reasons as to why)
/g (more reasons as to why)
/g Bye all, good luck.
/gquit
It would not solve the problem of them instantly kicking your alts, but you'd at least be able to give your reasons and leave on your own terms.
Alternatively, you could send in-game mail to officers (and possibly other members you were fond of, if any) explaining your reasons for leaving, then remove your alts from the guild in your own time.
Whatever happens, good luck on your new server.

I'm not worried about getting kicked, I'm worried about burning bridges and coming off like an elitist jackass.

The people who have left have usually stealth-left, or just been like "Hey guys I'm going to <other guild>. Bye" and quit when there's like 3 people on. I've talked more to everyone in the guild, especially the RLs, so it feels... disrespectful to just like log on when nobody else is on and /gquit, or do it when barely anyone is on.
I guess I could do that and send an in-game mail to the GM thanking him for having me in the guild

Unless you have outstanding commitments to the guild which you haven't mentioned, you owe the guild nothing. A quick letter to the guild leader thanking them for the opportunity is nice, but in no way required.
It sounds like this guild isn't interested in discovering why someone might want to leave their guild... all you do by trying to chat about it is opening yourself up for drama.
I'm wondering if you aren't, in fact, hoping that someone will try to talk you out of leaving. You don't really think that's going to happen, do you?
/gquit, transfer, and have fun.

No, I have a friend on the realm and in the guild who has been trying to talk me out of it, though. He was going to transfer with me but had a 'change of heart' when the RL was talking about forming a "tiger team" to down LK.

The best way to leave a guild is not to make a huge production out of it. Making a huge speech in guild chat (or on guild forums) is a wonderful way to turn the whole affair into a mudslinging dramafest.
It doesn't have to be dramatic. Honestly. When you're ready to leave, whisper your guild leader (or an officer that's online) and tell them that you don't think this is the guild for you and you're going to move on. Wish them well, thank them for letting you hang out with them for a while, and be on your way. If no one's online, shoot an in-game mail to your guild leader. If anyone whispers you afterwards, tell them the same.

If are that concerned about how to leave the guild, and there is no love lost, then just login and quit.
Alternatively, just start up your server transfer, and you will be removed as the transfer starts anyway.
It really isn't worth losing sleep over. Enjoy your new realm.

Yeah, quit the guild but add the cool people if you like to an alt if you keep one in the realm. that way you can still talk to them and don't have to worry about pissing them off to hard.

Dude if you're leaving the realm just tell them flat out that you're leaving. They can't really put a stop on your 25$ because they want you. If you think you're more experienced and competent in your abilities, just leave without an explanation. I try to not have too many alts in the same guild. Because if 1 is kicked then I should might as well /gquit with all the other alts as well. Harsh reality of it all dude is that you'll be forgotten and quickly replaced by another guy who wants to get phat lewtz and realizes how much they suck and leaves and the cycle begins again.
Just leave. If you feel the urge to tell someone, tell the guild master IN gchat so that EVERYONE sees it. People will be pissed, yeah thats expected, but they're going to try to replace you asap. Don't dwell on the feeling too much, it'll make you feel bad.
