I don't like seafood myself, but a lot of my family and friends do.

Well, even on the coast, here in America meat is much more plentiful than fish, and in alot of places they can only fish during certain times of the year. Or, at least that is what it seems to me, even though I live near a fishing hub.

I could be wrong (and usually am), but most people in the ol' USA tend to eat things that are quick and easy... and fish, while both quick and easy, also must be rather fresh. Other than some boxed fish sticks or things of that type, most people would rather go out for a burger than hit the local grocery store for some aquatic meat.
I think its also a matter of too many types to choose from, combined with "its just easier to get a pizza" type crap.

That's because America actually regulates fishing and sustainability of the fish being caught.
To some extent. It's probably more the fact that you've got less coastline per capita than many other nations, so sustainable fishing practices (which, believe it or not, are practised elsewhere in the world too) are likewise limited.
Australia has the same, if not more coastline than the US does, and around 8% of the population. So in theory, similar practices could provide us with up to 12 times more seafood than the US gets.

This is more likely to be the answer, if Jamie Oliver is to be believed. The UK are about as bad, if I'm not mistaken. Australia's currently undergoing a fresh food revolution of sorts, thanks to a recent reality cooking show.
Raw bluefin tuna belly, grilled blue eyed cod, freshly shucked oysters, even just a freshly caught, freshly battered barramundi steak, you guys are missing out :P

I'm in Canada personally, and in this area, it depends person to person. In my area of the countries, both are close in how common they are, since I'm more or less halfway between the main meat-producing area, and the main fish-producing area.
I went on a vacation to the east coast about....8 years ago? Maybe 9. ALL seafood there. All the time.
I'm trying to teach myself to like fish more, and more types of fish. It's really good for you. Right now I can really only enjoy the game fish like trout, bass, etc...
