They're as meaningless as imaginary magic swords you get from defeating AI-controlled dragons.

you do get something though....some are cool mounts.

It is a different aspect of the game. Some are easy as pie to get but you could be just doing the first step into a longer achivement chain. I am one of these people that enjoys going for achivements , be it for mounts , items or just a new title. Just because you do not understand an element o the games does not make it a worthless one. I do not really care for battlegrounds but does make me want to get them removed or slate people who do.

i dont get why people pursue them or even talk about them. they seem so completely extraneous and meaningless. it is the biggest farce the guys at blizzard have come up with.
Achievements, on the other hand, sometimes offer really difficult things to do in the game, like doing trizillion quests, or defeating a boss in a specific way. They are there to give people something to do while they level up, while they gear up and while you are fully geared and jumping in Dalaran.
all the so called "achievements" ive gotten have been totally by accident, and most of them are pvp warsong gulch achievements that guys try to deliberately get.
This is actually true, because it does happen. BUT there are some things that you cannot achieve by accident. Getting to do a lot of quests and knowing the story of the game, or being part of one of the best arena teams around are rewarded by the game with achievements that contain cool stuff like titles or pets. In other words, the game rewards you for playing and makes you feel cool when you do something big, and what a better way to do it than giving you the chance of rubbing it onto someboy else's face.
idk, it seems like such a blatant move by blizzard trying to get us to do "something for nothing" and i am completely mystified as to why players put even an ounce of value into these so called "achievements". what a hoot.
thoughts?
At least I consider achievements a better value than Gear Score. Achievements are also the way Blizzard has you share your history as a player of World of Warcraft with the rest of the community. When you see something like
Scarab Lord
, you are totally certain that that character is a lot more experienced than anyone else, thus making him reliable when needing assistance or doing simple things as Random Dungeons. It happens to me that, whenever I see someone with a cool title rewarded by an achievement I feel great, because the person in front of me knows about the game and can actually lead the group through a swift, quick and pleasant dungeon.
EDIT: WOHOO HELLO CHINESE WALL OF TEXT! :D

Okay, I'm going to put this in context.
Achievements are meaningless, they offer no reward other than your own satisfaction and the enjoyment of attempting them.
World of Warcraft is meaningless, it's just a program made out of code where you input variables and it creates a result via artificial intelligence. It only gives you satisfaction and happiness.
Life is meaningless, you're just a random piece of sentient grouping of cells, in turn a grouping of atoms, whose body is just the product of two other meaningless hunks of flesh via a self replicating code. It only gives you satisfaction and happiness.
Existence is meaningless, it is nothing but chance and we all live alone huddled in the darkness of mere being, where everything is meaningless. The greatest of writings are nothing more then carbon inscription upon a surface, the greatest of thoughts, theories, and philosophy nothing but vain products of evolution in a hunk of flesh that was lucky enough to group itself in a way that it gains sentience. Everything simply happens and morality is a conception that is meaningless because it is solely about granting meaningless beings meaning which does not exist. The best thing it can give is pleasure and satisfaction.
Now unless you agree with all those and take up nihilism, saying anything is meaningless is quite meaningless and vain. You don't do achievements, that's great. Cool story bro'. Are they meaningless? Certainly not.

Wow, and I thought I was drunk!
But yeah... while they may be totally meaningless to you, they mean something to others. It is like the typical struggle between PvP Lovers vs PvE Lovers that argue why the other characteristic exists if it is totally useless.

Achievements are about as meaningless as the rest of this game. If you don't like them, don't do them. I think PvP is pointless, doesn't mean I'm going to tell the people who enjoy it to stop wasting their time.
Frankly the whole bloody game is a waste of time. Every hour you spend on this game is an hour you could be out working and earning money, or volunteering, or spending time with friends and/or family.
It's called entertainment, everybody gets a different value out of it, and that's pretty much the entire point of it. There's a reason there's so many different things to do in WoW, not everybody enjoys every aspect of the game. You don't like achievements, good for you. Go do something you enjoy and leave people who do enjoy them alone.
Captcha: Broom Cannibalism. Those poor poor brooms, what did they do to deserve such a fate?

you have a point, but i dont get why yall are getting so offended in the first place. im looking for meaningful, competitive gameplay while others seem to value predictable brain-dead gameplay that completely lacks a challenge, im just trying to understand my fellow WoW players.
sorry for speaking my mind, i love this game and want to voice my opinion about it but alas i always get shot down and called a "troll"
If it makes you feel any better, I'm not offended :P
And I didn't see anybody call you a troll.

that's one of the more meaningful achievements i got quite by accident. then it could actually be considered an accomplishment.
I don't really agree with that. It is like saying that you feel proud of doing something you didn't even thought of doing. That is more coincidence than accomplishment.
Accomplishment is when, for example, you go into Naxxramas alone and get Patchwerk down. You work for it. You sweat for it. You don't sleep for it. You can't rest quietly until you get it. It is like the satisfaction of working hard on a relationship and then seeing the rewards, or the satisfaction of studying hard in college and being promoted with honors. Those do not ever happen by accident.
and EVERY little thing you do in wow is an achievement. getting a haircut is a freakin achievement. being enough of a loser to do all the quests in one zone, even though you have absolutely no reason to do it, is an 'achievement'.
First of all, you would be more than surprised of the amount of gold that you can get by completing achievements like
Icecrown: The Final Goal
. I am about to complete
Loremaster of Northrend
with more than 5k gold in my pockets, excluding Auction house sales.
Second, there are losers who also PvP and that can spend weekends (or weeks, for that matter) trying to get the rating cap in arenas.
Third, yes there are things that are easy as pie to get. But, on the other hand, there are
Feats of Strength
that aren't.
And if you don't like achievements at all, then tell Blizz to remove them.
PD1: Beer rules. Rum super rules. Vodka is the stuff.
PD2: If you think bear mounts are stupid,
Russia is SO coming for you
.

Achievements are part of gaming nowadays. XBLA, PSN both have achievements, most games have some sort of achievement system within it. Why do games have achievements? because it adds replay value. Getting certain achievements can take multiple times to beat a game. Which adds "worth" to a game.
Don't like achievements, find that playing a 20 hour game is worth your $60 that's fine. Some people find spending 40 hours to that game worth their $60.
So no, you're not going to avoid achievements as companies realize that achievements=money.
Now with WoW, yes, some of the achievements are useless such as the Barber shop one, however many show that you know how to play the game, that you are experienced in some aspect of the game. And no, achievements shouldn't be just for things that you accidentally did, because that doesn't show that you know how to play an aspect of the game, only that you do things on accident.
Yes, achievements are worthless, just like anything else in the game. Your epic sword. Meaningless. No point in having it. It's just a box in your character screen, and a couple of pixels in your hands.
Do I love my achievements, heck yes, it's what helps me keep playing the game, it adds replay to dungeons, bgs and zones. Doing all the quests in a zone? Gives you knowledge of the lore in a zone. Doing acheivements on bosses? It shows that you know how to use your characters skills, adapt your play style. With BG's it shows that you are skilled in that particular zone or play style. You got Ironman? Great, it shows that you probably have a technique on how to get the flag and keep it. Got that one in AB that says you recapped each of your own flags. Great it shows that you are probably good at defending your own flags
If you don't like achievements that don't do them. As you said, they're meaningless, if you get an achievement just ignore it. It doesn't hurt you, nor other players. So why bother complaining about things that other people enjoy?
