Who else is into progressive? I've kind of morphed from "classic rock hippie" to "prog rock/metal nerd" (not saying that I don't still love the classics, of course).
Prog metal is a pretty general genre.
You've got the rock-influenced bands like
King's X
, the goth-influenced
Opeth
, the jazzy
Liquid Tension Experiment
, the semi-classically inspired
Shadow Gallery
, the thrash
Dark Angel
, etc. etc.
Personally I like it all, but then again I like almost all metal anyways.

Implying Tool is any kind of metal. Lol.
Silly Sakarazu is silly.
Tool emerged quite embedded in the prog/experimental metal scene of the 90s. Take my favorite of their early songs for example:
Die Eier von Satan
. Sure it's a silly parody of a song, but it's still very much experimental metal. Sure the more recent albums are definitely more rock and less metal.

I'm curious about what "80's metal" (I'm sorry, I didn't know what else to call it) bands do some of y'all like. I never was a fan of that genre, but maybe my opinion will be changed.
The line between Hard Rock and Metal is a little hazy, especially looking at the 70s and 80s. Here's a sampling of some of the better bands and a couple songs from each that I like.
KISS
War Machine
Heaven's on Fire
Crazy Crazy Nights
AC/DC
Shoot to Thrill
For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)
Bon Jovi
Let it Rock
Runaway
Dio
Holy Diver
I Speed at Night
Def Leppard
Hight 'n' Dry (Saturday Night)
Van Halen
Panama
Judas Priest
Some Heads are Gonna Roll
Ram It Down
Mötley Crüe
Shout at the Devil
Live Wire
Def Leppard
God's of War
Ozzy Osbourne
Bark at the Moon
S. A. T. O.
Dokken
Bullets to Spare
Iron Maiden
Prowler
Charlotte the Harlot
Scorpions
No One Like You
Metallica
Jump in the Fire
...And Justice for All
Megadeth
Mechanix
