I'm usually one of the quiet people. It's not that I don't like you, it's just that I'm usually alt-tabbed or chatting in guild. Most of the people in random heroics seem barely literate anyway, it's not worth the trouble.

I'll generally say "Hello" and "Thanks for the run" in an LFD group. I will, reply when chatted with politely, as well. I generally see the same sort of behavior, although there are (as always) exceptions to the rule.
Most of the time when I'm in a random, though, I'm chatting in guild with people that I already know.
I think that this attitude
might
change if they ever allow you to specifically form cross-realm dungeon groups, rather than forming up randomly.

I used to be more chatty in LFD runs, but the novelty of people from other servers wore off eventually and now it's 'Howdy' when I pop in, 'Thanks for the run all' when I'm done, and that's still more than many say. Honestly it's just a heroic and I generally prefer the quiet or whatever's going on in /g to whatever small talk the party's going to make in the absence of discussing actual strategy.

But saying "hello" is a basic sign of respect for the people you group with. And it shows that you're willing to communicate. Not off-topic about dolphins, economy and tv shows, but about what is or might be going on in the dungeon.
I agree thoroughly with this. It's totally understandable that people may not want to chat much; even if people hadn't run these heroics a million times already they may not want to talk much for all sorts of reasons. Maybe there's another discussion they're already busy with in guild chat, maybe they're having a really rough day and would rather not get into discussions, so on and so forth. That's fine, that's understandable. But basic greetings are simple expressions of respect, and proof that they'll at least glance at party chat sometimes should communication prove necessary (and it most certainly can!).
If you don't want to have a long conversation, that's fair. If you can't bear to communicate even in the most rudimentary of senses, you should probably be taking a break from the game, not only to spare others the frustration but also for your own sake. If you're so burnt out you can't perform basic social activities, arguably the one thing humans are wired to do above all, things have gone awry.
As for me, I enjoy the run so much more when folks are talking in a run. It may take a few more minutes but I don't really notice since I'm actually having *fun*.

Sorry OP but I'm afraid you will get no sympathy from many here. I agree with you not only do people not talk even when all you would like to see is "Hi" or "hello" typed back but a lot of times they are just plain rude.
Face it the LFD tool has broken a part of the game, the part of the game that requires people to actually communicate with others. The content is tired. Everyone can run the Heroics blind folded now and they are bored. They simply run them to get the badges and get out.
Add to that the cross-realm issues where people take the attitude of "You are not my friend, I do NOT have to talk to you I simply have to run this instance with you" and basically you have the problem you are observing.
first to the OP: while i do like the chatty HC's once in a while, since they are nice and can be fun, they aren't always fun and do slow it down, and most of the time im doing 5 mans its caused im doing a daily i want over quickly, not becouse it isn't fun as such, im just not feeling very chatty myself. Not saying i wouldn't reply to a friendly comment or a minor chit-chat :)
now to Lostdorf, i really dissagree cause i really
looooooooovvveeeeed to wait hell of a long time to finally get into that instance i wanted to, or having to make my own group, which i honestly disliked.
thanks to the LFD system more people does dungeons, getting into them arent a neck pain, and honestly its nice to meet people outside my server. Of course its not perfect, but to complain over small things like rude people, or people who just have another view on how they want their run done (meaning for example silent people) doesn't meant he LFD system is a crappy thing. IF you so strongly dislike it, dont use it, and dont come with the "ill loose badges" thing, cause thats another bonus the LFD system gave us :P.
p.s if i seemed a bit unfriendly or aggresive there i do apologize, but im to lazy to rewrite ^_^
