If you really want to keep your privacy, don't add RealID friends. Same with Facebook - if you don't trust it, why use it?
I certainly won't be using Real ID for a good month or so.
But with facebook they have privacy controls based around contact groups etc which is what blizzard could use

Blizzard's FAQ also touts as a "completely optional and voluntary level or identity."
Also, "We plan to update our Parental Controls with tools that will allow parents to manage their children's use of Real ID. We'll have more details to share in the future."
There's your future level of privacy.
I'm glad they are going to protect our children in the FUTURE, very responsible.
The fact is ADULTS know better then to use this system, its the children who will use it, no one else with any sense will.

I'm going to use it, because I understand how it's meant to be used.
I'm going to add my brother, my girlfriend, and my best friend, and that's it, because those are the only people I know intimately enough and want that much contact with.
I'm sorry that you're incapable of using Real ID how it was meant to be used?

It just seems contradictory to me that they say things like being able to have a "call to arms"
That's the OP's words, not Blizzard's.
He's on a crusade to try and turn Real ID into something it wasn't designed to be.

I love the "

As opposed to what, demanding that Blizzard turn it into something that it was not designed to be?
I like the way it works just fine, because I've used it on the PTR. I've already chosen the people I'll Real ID, and they're the only ones that I will. They have enough sense to leave me alone if I turn my busy flag on, enough respect to know that if I hop onto a bank alt after I said I'm going to bed, I'm going to bed very soon, and enough camaraderie with me to not rat me out to my guild leadership if I play hooky.
So, uh, problem is where?

From what I'm reading on the Blizzard RealID FAQ, even Friends of Friends can also see your real name.
What information about me will other players see when I use Real ID?
If you are using Real ID, your mutual Real ID friends, as well as their Real ID friends, will be able to see your first and last name (the name registered to the Battle.net account). You will also be able to see the first and last name of your Real ID friends and their Real ID friends...
I wont be using this service because it shows my real name. If I wanted it known, I'd just tell them.

EDIT:
http://us.battle.net/realid/faq.html
Am I able to set my status to show my Real ID friends whether I am online or away?
You are always able to set your status to show whether you are online, away, or busy. Any Real ID or character-level friend on your friends list will see your online status.
Who should I add to my Real ID friends list?
Real ID is a system designed to be used with people you know and trust in real life -- friends, co-workers and family -- though it's ultimately up to you to determine who you wish to interact with in this fashion.

Yes. And when your RealID friend's account gets compromised, the account pirate gets to see your real name also.
I wonder how long it will be until gold spammers are impersonating people? It'll really give it that personal touch! "/w Hey, Joe, it's Xaratherus - could I borrow like 50 gold?" Or "/w its Susan, could you send me a few eternals from the guild bank?"

First off a well thought out and informative post, I hadn't given any real though to the real ID system at all.
Honestly though, and I think most people will feel the same, unless I know you very very well, then you are not getting my real ID.
Two people in game know me, and most of my alts, well enough to maybe be added to a real ID system.
I am close enough with them to be able to tell them I want some hassle free time, or that I'm just chilling so really see no need for them to have real ID.
I won't be a part of any guild that demands Real ID, and I think most sensible guild leaders will realize that asking for this as a membership requirement will lead to many core raiders just leaving in favor of a less intrusive guild.
Maybe I am lucky, but the guilds my toons are in don't demand anything OTT.
I sign up for raids and make them, if I don't sign I will occasionally help out if they are short, or I am simply not available.
Ive always been pretty honest with what I am doing in game.
I'm leveling this toon means that
I'm going offline means that
I'd rather do TotC tonight means that
and I'm not available to raid tonight I am doing X means just that.
I don't like the idea of it myself, but as long as it remains optional, then it is not a problem.
I like your post, you went past my anger over the privacy issues and went right of the sub note, what a waste of effort. it is such a nice system, but reading here -- How many responsible people are going to use it at all. I can think of many people I would like to talk to cross realm, but i can't and remain responsible at the same time?
It is useful for my wife, and my brother? Trust me, they intended many of us to friend, they want it to be Facebook, but with NO privacy settings at all - That does not upset you? They want to see how many of us are suckers before they add the settings for us. Shame on them.

Doesn't even have to be your friend's account that gets compromised. It could be one of his friends that you don't even know and they'll get your real name.

A feature similar to this was a requirement in FFXI Online. There's a real simple solution: invisible status. If it's not already part of the "Real ID" feature, it will be, I can promise that. Also, you can lock whichever of your player profiles you want, making them anonymous too all who wish to view them (in FFXI you could go to the Playonline lobby and view your friends "pages" which included all of their characters and their self made bios).
The concept is simple if you couldn't tell by the name, you can go "invisible" and have it appear as if you're offline. You can still see which of your "Real ID" friends are online, but they cannot see you.
I don't think this is as big of an issue as some of us are making it out to be, in fact, I don't think its an issue at all. There are simple fixes to it. If Blizz hasn't already implemented them then it's foolish to think they won't. Just because this is new to WoW doesn't mean its new to the MMO.
If you have a giant (paranoid IMO) problem with this feature, I agree with the method of not using it. Just wait it out until it is updated to your standards of security then start using it.
Edit: typo
