I believe it's CTRL+1 that makes your pet attack your current target. Or maybe CTRL+1 is just the key bind for the first slot on the pet action bar, I can't recall. But you can set your pet on passive/defensive and just hit the key bind this way.
You can also add the line to any macro for "/petattack" and that will have the pet attack whatever you are targeting by default.
"/petattack " can be useful too.

I believe you can make macros for using pet abilities, or you used to. When i lvl'd my first warlock i had a macro that you cast VW's "Growl" and Shadowbolt or something. You just use the name of the pets ability and the "Rank XX" addition.
Like this:
#Showtooltip Serpent Sting
/cast Serpent Sting Rank 12
/cast Growl
End of story. Have'nt tested this though but will do so at first given chance.

Yeah, I tried that. Wanted to put it on the active bar but it wouldn't go there. But I did play around with hitting the attack button. Easy enough to do with planning ahead.
At least two options for this:
Go into key bindings, find the special action bar bindings (I think that's the right name) and change it to whatever key you were going to bind it to by dragging it out onto a bar.
Create a new macro, give it a name and an icon (
#showtooltip
isn't going to do anything in this macro, so you'll have to choose one if you don't want it to stay
?
). Type
/petattack
in the macro. Drag that to your bars.
and as far as I know pet skills can't go on the Hunter's bar, except for Autocast On or Off in a macro.
You can't drag them out, but you can make a macro that behaves just like you had. For example...
#showtooltip
/cast Call of the Wild
Like this:
#Showtooltip Serpent Sting
/cast Serpent Sting Rank 12
/cast Growl
There's no need to specify the rank of a spell unless you want to cast a rank lower than max rank. Also, when you specify the rank, you have to put it in parenthesis, like this:
Serpent Sting(Rank 12)
. Your macro should just be...
#showtooltip
/cast Serpent Sting
/cast Growl
...ignoring the fact that it would probably be on cooldown as it would likely be on autocast, etc.

I have Shift+F as my Pet - Passive ability, which effectively recalls him back to my side.
I have Shift+D as my Pet - Defensive ability, which will make him attack anyone that I do, and also come to my aid if I get attacked while out-of-combat.
I have G as my Pet - Attack ability, which will make him attack my current target(Unfriendly), even if on Passive.
I also have his Growl on Shift+T, incase it's needed(soloing elites). My SV hunter can blow down mobs before they reach me at this point, so growl autocast is OFF, as it should be for raiding.
Using these keybinds is how I would pull far away mobs without having to move. Target a mob. Press G. Pet runs in, hits it once. Press Shift+F, pet runs back towards me. When mob is in range, I commence firing and hit Shift+D. Pet turns around and begin whacking on the mob again.
macro's are overcomplicated for this and can fail to do exactly what you want them to do. Much easier to make 3 keybinds right around your WASD keys for pet micromanaging. You can even keybind your pets special ability(snares, etc) for PVP purposes, to use it at specific times instead of leaving it available for the AI to figure out.
