So apperently I missed the class about the so called importance of rage dumping,
and would like some clarification about what it is. I'm guessing its to prevent wasting rage when
you'er already at 100 points.
And can someone enlighten me on "spreadsheetz?" I'm not sure if its the program from Microsoft Word or an online Dps calculater.
Thanks
Rage dumping is the use of an ability (usually not on the GCD) in order to prevent capping, yes.
You will use Heroic Strike as prot, for example, when your others spells are on CD (Revenge, Shield Slam, Devestate etc).
I'm not actually sure what a spreadsheet is :D
Heroic strike and cleave are rage dumps, they prevent you from getting more rage from your next autoattack.
It is not used when other ability's are on cooldown, since its not affected by cooldowns. You use it whenever you have an abundance in rage.
Lets make an example.
Take a fury warrior. You know your autoattacks generate about 25-60 rage per swing from your mainhand and lets say 20-40 from you offhand (low end are glancing blow and top end a crit, in between is average auto damage). You have been fighting for some time and have 50 rage. In the next 2 seconds you will have a attack from your mainhand and in 2,5sec you do a special attack (take bloodlthirst )and then in 3 sec a swing from your offhand lands. So all has a 0,5sec window between each other.
If you just let it go you will end up with either 75 rage or 100 rage with 10 rage being wasted since the cap is 100. then bloodthirst costing 30 rage will take you down to either 45 or 70 rage. Then your offhand lands taking you to either 65 rage or 100rage with 10 rage wasted. So in this way you let 20 rage just go wasted.
If you use HS when you see that your at 50 and know that the autoattacks are coming up.
You gain no rage from main hand, leaving you at 35 rage since HS costs 15 rage to activate untalented. You then proceed to use BT leaving you at 5 rage. Then your offhand lands taking you up to either 25 or 45 rage.
You will have less rage then the scenario above, but no rage was wasted in this way.
For prot warriors its similar but with damage taken instead of damage done. So if your prot you anticipate when you are going to get hit by the enemy next time.
Why we do it is because of just how HS and Cleave works, they add a lite extra damage to your autoattack, and makes them into special attacks, removing chance of glancing blow and lowering the hit needed for it to land since neither fury or prots are normaly hitcapped for white swings.
The numbers are something I pulled from my magic hat so they are not fact but its just a example to show how rage dumps works.
Spreadsheets is probably Landsouls spreadsheet.
Landsouls warrior spreadsheet is a excell sheet that Landsoul has coded to get you the theorycrafting visualized.
You pop in your gear and race and it will get you a estimate of what your dps should be and I think it gives you advice on rotation.
You can get it from
