What is this topic about? You are a lvl 73 prot warrior. You probably have a lvl 80 death knight... oh yes, its in your signature. And you are asking if it is
safe
(?) to save up for tanking pieces for your warrior when he dings 80, and enchant those pieces, and use the tempered saronite in the other slots?
Like wtf? If you can get those things crafted, it will be good to have them by the time your warrior hits 80. I can not see any logical way someone could figure out that having a lvl 245 epic tanking item on a fresh lvl 80 tank would be bad. Sure you could ask that about the ICC pieces, since those do not have defense, and i would actually not recommend them for a fresh lvl 80 tank, but you are not asking about those, so this point is moot.
"Go DPS at 80 to collect tank gear." is a noobish advice and hints to lack of self-consciousness of the poster. If you tanked all the way from 1 to 79, you should be confident enough to tank right after you
somehow
get your defense cap.
Back in the days of my druid in patch 3.0, i dinged 80, farmed eternals myself to get some
epic shoulders
crafted (i crafted them myself, had leveled LW to 450 the moment i dinged 80..), and started tanking heroics. With like 23k hp in fricking bear form, everything i had were questing blues and those ilvl 200 epic shoulders, that are now considered crap. And no, healers in those times have not been decked in ilvl 232+ epics.
Back in the days of my DK, also in patch 3.0, i dinged 80, crafted myself a
titansteel helmet
, and tanked friggin Naxx 10 in it. And that was in the days when Naxx 10 was almost end-game content (cause sincerely, Naxx was never REALLY end game content in WotLK). With 23k hp, and only hitting the def cap with Defense potions.
Now in the days of 3.3.3, i dinged 80 with my warrior, got some
wrists
for her, and also tanked right away. I did heroic Pits of Saron with 26k hp, and i did not have any real trouble. I also had to use defense potions to get def capped by the way.
Getting epic stuff crafted is good, and always will be. You can tank heroics in blues, with no epic stuff crafted. By pre-crafting stuff, you can boost yourself in the beginning. Do not forget that you are getting items that tanks did not even dream of back when they tanked the WotLK heroics.
And if you are a tank, be a tank. Do not hide yourself behind the DPS sticker.

Similar to Thror, I recently leveled a warrior from 10 to 80 as Protection. Once at 80 you don't even have to be defense capped to start tanking heroics. I tanked my first few with only 420 def. Sure, your healers won't always be very excited to see you, but as long as you know what you're doing and pull packs one-by-one, you should be fine.
On the other hand, fresh lvl 80 tanks joining up as 'DPS' are very very annoying. They don't have the gear, and sometimes not even the spec. Just yesterday I had a protection paladin rocking a steady 500 dps in heroic UP. He thought to make up for his uselessness by marking a skull on whichever mob he was attacking at all times. I gave him similar advice: "This dungeon ain't big enough for the both of us. Get the hell out and go queue up as a tank."
Oh, and another advantage of doin' heroics as Prot: no queues, baby!

Personally, i would recommend you going for DPS gear first, then tanking gear. Sure it takes longer time to gather dps gear (actually there are many ways to do so), but tanking could be frustrating if you are insufficiently geared.)

Bah, i was able to hold single targets without trouble, and like 75% of all AoE against a lvl 80 warrior doing 4k dps... when i was level 76. With a heirloom hammer. I did about 4000 TPS by then.
At 80, i only had minor trouble until i got the sword from POS (and soon after the mace from ICC 10), after that it was cakewalk. AoE Threat in heroics is not that hard... its kinda worse in ICC with some scattered pulls with tons of casters... Marrowgar trash is not easy to hold... Deathwhisper trash is not easy to hold... plague wing trash is not easy to hold... and so on.

? Contradict yourself much? You are tanking in DPS gear, and then complaining about people DPSing in tank gear? Overall, your advice is horrible.
Excuse me? Where did you see me state I was wearing DPS gear? Sure, I did happen to wear an agility cloak at the time, but apart from that I had a full tanking kit. I just wasn't defense capped because it was all crappy low level gear.
If you have the Ulduar boots and belt, along with the ToC chest and bracers, then you are well ahead of the game and can easily tank heroics.
You're right, mate. In order to tank heroics you need to have Uld/ToC gear. In order to tank ICC10 you need to have ICC25 gear. It all makes sense now.
Anyway, to further explain my complaints about people DPSing in tank gear is that they just don't want to work for their gear. They take the easy way out by picking the 'DPS' role, because of what is has become. You need to have
x
defense and
y
health to tank this! You need to have this much spell power and that much mp5 to start healing! But just enter the random heroic queue as DPS as soon as you can. You don't have to be good at it, just let the others carry you!
You know those lvl 12 turds that spam for a boost in DM? They're not that much different, except at least they have to ask you for a boost and you can decline, while these 'DPS' just sneak into your dungeon through the back door and force you to boost them.

If you have 420 Def at lvl 80, you are in mostly DPS gear.
Dammit, you're right, that should be 520.
