As far as I know, Haunt and Sbolt both count as direct damage, so those are the spells that will proc the trinket.
Exactly how useful it is, I have no clue (I raid as demo, and it's an alt ... so yeah :p). Try looking it up on Elitist Jerks.

just as a point of clarification, "increased casting speed" and "cast time reduction" aren't really the same thing.
the 10 second down to 7 second cast that you mention is a 30% reduction in
cast time
but not casting speed and haste represents an increase in speed.
the formula for haste rating is:
Haste Rating needed at level 80 = ((Base Cast Time / Desired Cast Time) - 1) * 32.79 * 100
to find the percentage we're talking about we can use:
haste% = ((base / desired) -1) *100
42.85%
= ((10 / 7) -1) * 100
this is why, to take a 1.5 second spell down to the 1 second minimum, it counter-intuitively takes 50% haste and not the 33% haste you might imagine. the 50% represents the ability to cast 50% more spells in the same time and the reduction we see in the cast time is a result of that.
edit to expand:
at 1.5 seconds you can cast 10 spells in 15 seconds.
at 1 second you can cast 15 spells in 15 seconds, a 50% increase in spells.

thank you for this explanation asa, I have been wondering the exact formula myself. Maybe put something like this in the guide? Just a thought because its very useful

well, i think it's probably covered in the otherwise out of date stats sticky by irtharry.
it's difficult to know where to stop with the additions as the other stickies stop getting updated. bloat is becoming an issue since people get intimidated by too much writing and neglect to read any of it ^^
there'll be a complete reset soon enough (cataclysm) and we'll need all new stickies.
