It takes teamwork to win a BG, so one person that's hideously good at arena will not win it his or herself no matter what their arena rating. Killing blows don't carry flags, cap nodes, or hold/burn towers after all.
However, folks that are successful in arena are often worth more than their weight in the organized chaos that is BGs, since most folks in a bg just tend to start firing/swinging at the first red thing they see while the arena goers have already decided who to shut down, who to screw with, who to keep busy, and who to kill, and are doing it yesterday. So one affliction warlock can in fact recap and hold the blacksmith all by himself against 5 allies, kill them all, and feel great about freeing up more horde to go snag something else.
Mostly it's just that arena is a very cruel teacher in terms of situational awareness and reaction time; once you've spent a lot of time doing it, BGs feel kinda tame by comparison, as do most of the folks in there.

Being an arena fanatic, I have to call you wrong...
You will see many arena players only killing for a good reason... It's the only pleasure we get out of the mind numbing boredom that is BGs... BGs are simple: Cap flags, break walls, kill flag carriers, etc. Half the time I find myself ghostwolf attacking people just for the laugh.
You can see why we easily hate them. Unfortunately, honor is required for offsets... So enjoy us globaling you guys!

A bit off topic, but I believe there's a discrepancy in both sides' definition of good arena players. On celestior/shade's side I believe they have 2500+ players in mind, and on the other, they're thinking of anyone above 1800.
So let's clarify on the subject and say that we're not talking about the !@#$ players that clutter all the ratings sub 2300.

Im not sure brah, when I kill 5 players on the enemy side every min or so making them unable to assist their team in the bg, Im sure im helping alot while dong lots of dmg and kbs.
I barely partake in the actual objective of the bg, except when i kill them at their flag and cap it, and I seem to win most tof the time, I say I'm doing my part.
bgs take skill?

This pretty nicely sums up the Op's point. Thanks for making it so obvious. When you are mashing the inexperienced the real players are taking objectives away from you. Kill 'em all, they don't know why they're fighting anyway.
