A lot of these bad tanks start off being bad at lower levels. Today on my horde toon I had a tank who zoned into the dungeon with 5 minutes left on his rez sickness, so he only had 168 health. Luckily me, a mage, and a rogue managed to kite/CC several of the mobs while we waited for his sickness to wear off. Once that happened though, he went kinda slow, and needed on EVERYTHING, even after we told him to stop.

honestly from reading this all i feel is that you sir... Are one HELL of a ^&*!@#bag, some a new at 80 some dont have gold or experience to know how to get the good gear asap. Stop being such a baby and go through with it. Give them helpfull advise if they dont have the appropriate skill. Thats what the dungeons are for, learning and gearing up (besides having fun ofc.)
but my honest oppinion is, the problem is you not "nooblet tanks" NOT the group not supporting you, but you!
just needed to vent.
Well, if they don't have the knowledge, they should do the research before "lawl heroics." Heroics are easy now because people overgear them, but I remember numerous wipes on fail groups back in the day. Some groups can still have problems, e.g. tank who doesn't move right on Lavanthor or on the teleport boss in VH, the group that doesn't DPS the add or who can't kill the images in OK, etc.
If gold is a problem, maybe they should use dailies or professions to get gold. In blues and with normal flying, you can still easily do 25 dailies in under a few hours (including travel time), which get you ~325g. On my realm, that would be more than enough to get a full set of saronite blues crafted. There is more to the game than "level to 80 and get carried until I have the gear." Pardon me for assuming people should actually work for their toon, instead of just having me give them hand-me-downs.
I may be elitist, but at least I hold myself to the same standard as anyone else. If we wipe in a raid, I am the first to say "this was my fault," or "I kept making this mistake in triage." I also make sure I am capable of handling a heroic before I do one. On tanks I'll be defense capped, on healers I will be capable of keeping the group alive without going OOM during the fight, and on a DPS I'll be capable of doing 1700+ before I join heroics. So yes, I'm elitist, but I'm not a d-bag. Because I hold myself to the same standard, which honestly isn't very high at all.
Also, @ those going in DPS gear - I honestly think you can make runs go faster by doing tank+3 DPS and grabbing several groups to AoE down, instead of just AoEing one group at a time with 4 DPS.

Man, why do you type such a long answer to a post that ends with "just needed to vent". He pretty much flat out said that his post contains BS.
Tanks who freshly got to lvl 80 and did not get their defcap are fricking noobs. There is a plenty of high-defense items that can be gotten from normals, and dungeon quests. I have leveled two plate tanks to 80 up to now, and am soon gonna ding the last one... and i never even got the idea of stepping into a dungeon without the defcap. Heck i bought a stack of defense potions if i needed a couple extra points, but i never ran crittable.

Normally each group goes down during the travel distance to the next group.

RETRIBUTION PALADIN THAT REALLY ROXZ:
Atm i cba to wait for hc queue as a dps, so i've gotten a bad habit of queing as tank, popping Righteous Fury and using my SoC. Not much trouble with a healer who got more in his head that stacking hit rating...
Btw reason i started doing this was becuz me drood friend(we are both 5.8k gs+) asked me to tank it, i do have tank spec but i never use it =P anyway we got thrown into Gundrak(Surprise) and i went nuts, basicly trying to do most dps will net you a good bunch of agro + with icc10/25 gear you got a good 25k hp unbuffed, small buff's + random buff = 30k~ so like a Uld10 hp lvl i guess. Most of my healers says it is more fun for them too, cuz they actually get to do something. Ofc some of them nerdrages becuz they dont know wtf they are doing and leaves the group, in wich case i put on prot gear and go without healer.
Tbh i dislike HC tanking, and that for a good reason. It gets boring doing the same $%^& over and over. After a certain lvl tanking Icc25 trash and Gundrak HC is the same, no matter how many mobs you get on you. + the random blue geared dps can never, ever over agro, anything.
FROM A HEALERS PERSPECTIVE:
Yea i play a druid too, random gear, i got a 187 belt, and a 264 weapon.
5k gs or some !@#$ and a brain in my pocket. and i love when i get tanks that really suck at what they do. that means more healing, and more challenge. When the DK who is blue/epic with 200 and 219 goes right ahead and pulls 1 mob with deathgrip and the 3 other mobs goes bonanza on my grp i get to pull my weight or loose the group. Ofc sometimes we wipe, that is supposed to happen. it isnt called a HC for now reason. You're are supposed to be a hero to get trough here.
You are not prepared!
Face it, and never ever join the boyscouts... ever!

@trollpeekatyou
with 3x5k dpsers that trash is dead before the undergeared tank has time to respond, mate.
I missed this earlier, glad TheBloodCharged quoted it and reminded me. 3x5k DPS is a nice dream. 3x5k DPS in
randoms
is just that: a dream. You're more likely to get 3x1k. Now, if you're going to enforce that 5k DPS in a heroic, then something tells me a simple requirement of 535 defense is far less elitist.

It seems that with the lack of tanks gear score means nothing for them.
Last night I was working on an alt and he was dps.
First tank was a 2350 gs pally in forge. He did fine mainly the healer and 2 dsp were over 5k gs so we had no problems.
Wait till you get a group of 5k's in a random and the tank is a 4800gs DK that thinks he is God!
yep he can't hold agro...give me 10 minutes and HEY HEALER U SUCK
Don't have a damn clue but it seems that EVERY dk tank thinks they can tank ROFL
I have a icc bear and a 200-232 geared pally about 4k gs and he has never had a problem tanking randoms from the day he made 80. BUT a dk tank that is good are few and far between.

Think about the poor rogue that is handcuffed to them. I'm geared like hell and steal aggro from a good portion of the tanks I am grouped with. I also enjoy tanks who switch targets after the pull. I just recently grouped with a warrior who forced me to spam my assist macro as much as mutilate because I could never be sure what target he was on from one second to the next.

Looking up strategy's is no different than buying a game and a walkthrough at the same time and doing somebody else's "way", which to me is incredibly boring.
There's a big difference though between some games and WoW. There are a lot of things in WoW that
must
be done a certain way (or there's only a few ways to do it). For example, I don't know how I would have done 4 Horsemen without a guide, we would have probably gone in there and gotten destroyed because we didn't have people close enough, and then had to come read the fight.
The tank is the one leading the group, 9/10 times. They are generally assigning kill order, setting the pace of the pulls, and they are the one in charge of positioning the boss. In every guild I have been in, the main tank has always been the raid leader, because really they're doing that job anyway. So it makes sense that a tank in a dungeon will have at least looked up the fights.
Again, nothing I don't do myself - I knew all of the fights before I tanked them.

If a new tank tells me he is new to the instance, its not a big deal for me to quickly explain it for him, not flame him and say l2Wowhead.
True, but my comments have been more about the class in general. A 45k HP tank can walk into a dungeon and do fine without following the strat, but if you're going with a new tank he can easily take extra damage by not knowing the fights, and being crittable will make it all the worse.
However, there is a big difference between "I don't know Levanthor" and "How do I find what my defense skill is?" The later should not be in heroics.
