Main tank healing

I'm not a healer, but my wife is. I'm a DK, currently DPS but a former main tank of a 10 man guild. Just want to let you know upfront that I don't know much about the 'art of healing.'
Anyway.
Recently my wife has gotten a lot of flak for being a Holy Priest, with people whining and saying that Holy Priests can't main tank heal, and then refusing to even give her a chance and/or blaming her when things fall apart. Her gear isn't perfect: she is fine for ICC 10 man content, but not ridiculously over-geared for the content she runs.
Our mains don't raid together anymore, but back when we did (Naxx / Ulduar) she would solo-heal the tanks (usually me included) without any problem. She never had people tell her that she should only raid heal as Holy, and was usually the preferred choice among the available healers (the other was a druid and another priest, iirc).
I was surprised when I started seeing this opinion show up, and with my limited healer knowledge I don't know why everyone would be saying Holy = poor tank heals. I'd thought Holy was quite good at tank heals because their healing done was always so high, and the nuke heals I always got were quite large.
Can anyone explain this to me? Either why the people saying this are n00bs, or why holy priests would not be ideal tank healers. Thanks :)

Holy priests can have pretty large heals, but they just don't have the single target HPS to keep up a tank during really heavy hits (unless cooldowns are managed by both the healer and the tank properly). Disc just has a little more room for error as it can mitigate so much. . Neither will heal tanks as effectively as a holy pally (especially if both tanks are taking damage at once), but both can do it. Disc just has a few more tools to help make the inc damage easier to manage.

Plus holy cannot really keep up the main tank healing for long. In Naxx 3.0, I was solo-healing the off-tank on Patchwerk25, which I was always proud of, my mana was never too low to keep the tank up either. :D
However, things have changed and holy cannot keep up with the damage output on tanks, or maintain it, as well as they could due to scaling. They can still bring back the raid, however, and are good raid healers. Of course, raid healing also includes throwing a heal or two at the tanks whilst waiting for a raid-wide AoE or something similar, so it's not like you have no control over the tanks' health. :)

I mean that they(as in a disc/holy priest) CAN heal it. But it's done better by a pally. (assuming gear/skill/etc equal). Meaning the tank will be topped off more, less risk of the healer going OOM, less risk of accidental tank death from healer falling behind, etc...

Thankfully, these types of problems should disappear (if things are designed properly) with cataclysm. This is a noted weakness to holy priests, which is why they've developed the idea of the "chakra".
REGARDLESS (or apparently IRREGARDLESS to some of you), a Holy priest CAN Tank heal, though they are weighted in design specifically for raid healing. As others have stated, Holy priests can do the job, yes. Is it EASY for them to do the job? No. Their tools make tank healing possible, but other classes of healers (namely Disc and holy Paladin) have much MORE and better tools to do the job.
I mean, I can use a flat-head screwdriver to screw in a philip's head screw... But there're other tools to do the job that have safeguards against slipping up. This doesn't mean that if you don't have a philip's head screwdriver, you can't use the flat head to do the job.

In a 10 man, unless there is a holy pally, I find it best to have all the healers heal both the tanks and the raid. It's not hard. Healing priority is still self > tanks/healers > dps, but please, heal whoever is taking damage. A holy pally is the only healer I would dedicate to the tanks since they are strong dual-target healers and weak raid healers.
