I leveled from 40 to 76 in prot.
Before you get Shield Slam it becomes difficult to kill things, even though you're much tougher to kill by yourself. By that logic, it's perfectly viable to level Protection.
Also, with the looking for dungeon feature, it makes it very easy to level, considering you're mashing through so many mobs at a given time, as well as there being a huge shortage of tanks at every level.
So i'd reccomend staying Arms or Fury til 40, but switch over once you get the big-hitting abilites that Prot warriors scoop up around then.

Buff to Revenge = prot pwns now.
As long as you have Imp. Revenge ofc.
This seems to hold true for me. At lvl 56 now, i regularly pull 50% of my groups dps in dungeons with revenge crits of up to 2.2k.

I have never leveled a DPS character, so i dont know how fast killing with one of those is.... but wtf, how is killing with a tank slow?
I have leveled my warrior through LFD (mostly) and quests (not much, but still quite a lot. mostly Stranglethorn Vale, Outland and Northrend). Since level 15 i got used to tanking and killing elites in the dungeons. After doing a couple dungeon runs, i found out that normal monsters outside of an instance are underwhelmingly simple to kill. I absolutely do not remember a monster that would be of equal level to mine (up to +3), and cause trouble. Even Sillithus bugs that were 4 levels above at the time i came there were simple prey. Outland monsters stood no chance, and so dont the Northrend ones.
A prot warrior that is played well can usually do over 35% of the overall damage in every instance, kill a normal world mob within a few seconds, and solo every single group quest that doesnt send you to an instance. Ive done all the Howling Fjord group quests so far... and am looking forward to the ones in Dragonblight.
Stop the "prot kills stuff slowly" comments if you do not know what you are talking about.

You should use the mace for tanking and enchant it with crusader
Slower weapon means more rage per hit>Bigger crit which give even more rage.
This is a fallacy. While it is true that a slower weapon will give more rage per hit, you are doing less hits than a faster weapon. The overall rage gain ends up being the same.
You could argue that a faster weapon is actually better, since you lose less rage when you heroic strike. For example, lets compare a 1.0 speed weapon vs a 2.0 speed weapon (for sake of math ease). You get 60 swings per minute giving, say 10 rage per hit, vs 30 swings per minute giving 20 rage per hit. Now lets say you perform 10 heroic strikes. The fast weapon will still have 50 white swings for 500 rage, the slow weapon will have 20 white swings for 400 rage, while both get the same 10 heroic strikes doing a flat +xx damage.
Faster weapons are smoother rage generation and less impact when you do queue a heroic strike or cleave, and allow you to perform more heroic strikes/cleaves (if you have a lot of incoming rage from being hit). Slower weapons will do slightly more damage with Rend, Deep Wounds, and Devastate.
That's the tradeoff. While leveling, it doesn't matter either way, though I'd lean toward faster swings. One thing I hated while leveling my Ret Paladin was using the BoA two-hander and having the mob drop to like 10% health in one swing, then having to wait another 3 seconds for my next white swings.
But again, it doesn't matter much.

There are other tradeoffs when it comes to weapon speed, the first being the impact on instant attacks based on weapon damage. The other is the effect on deep wounds, where a slow weapon makes each deep wound do more damage, while a fast weapon produces more deep wound procs; the slow weapon pulls ahead when you do more instant attacks, particularly AoE attacks since their frequency is not governed by weapon speed but cooldowns and your ability usage.
Overall, for solo levelling, I would prefer a slow weapon. For tanking in levelling dungeons, I'd say it's more of a toss-up depending on your rage supply, though it may still somewhat favor the slow weapon. Heroics, at least before you're well geared, will grant you more rage and thus perhaps favor a fast weapon slightly, but it's when you get to raid tanking that fast weapons really come into their own due to the almost unlimited rage supply.

I leveled prot the entire way, and an arms/fury warrior til about 45ish, and i must say i was topping dps in dungeons right into mid northrend as prot. SIngle and multiple targets.
Prot warrior dps is very steady until the end of the game when dps classes seem to just jump 10fold.
While leveling, you should have very little downtime if you use your cooldowns and such alot, if you're a draenai (my warrior was) you have the free heal which makes that whole thing infinitely better. Because you'll be prot, and presumably tanking dungeons, you'll be very well geared due to the demand for tanks.
I find prot warrior leveling, way better than arms/fury, you feel very squishy, which is especially weird for a plate/mail class, and you do roughly the same amount of dps, and able to pull large groups with ease.
Also, the pvp abilities as a prot warrior makes those fools trying to kill you look like idiots. Unless you meet a lock... There you're more than likely screwed.

Also, prot leveling becomes even better once you get the warbringer talent. You can charge in def. stance and in battle, and that pretty much eliminates rage problems. Prot leveling is just a lot of fun.

I used to suck at my warrior long long ago. For some reason, i just like NEVER swtiched stances.
Today, with another warrior, its totally different. I swtich stances all the time (battle, go charge, defense, get mob down, berserk, bloodrage, intercept, defense...) and that make my tanking and question SO fricking better than the first warrior.
Now i'm 51 and i got warbringer... and its just PERFECT. I learned to stance-dance, but i almost dont need it anymore.
