Oh agreed. Burning a cooldown on someone who only had to move a little bit to avoid it but was too dumb to do so is annoying. But the thing is, when someone is falling down on their job in WoW, it's typically the healers that end up having to pick up the slack somehow.
When I first read the blue post on Leap of Faith, my brain started instant casting...
1. OMG HOLY DEATH GRIP!
2. PvP: This is going to get the hell abused out of it in PvP.
3. PvE: Designed to save stupid DPS who can't get out of the fire.
Those were the first things that popped into my mind. But when you think about it..
Leap of Faith will be a unique ability that can make for some seriously fun gameplay, but there are a lot of risks involved. It think it would be safe to assume that the ability may have a longer CD then Death Grip. (I was right, just looked it up, 45 second CD)
I'm not going to bother pondering on this ability too deeply because it's still just a preview and will likely change, but really looking forward to the awesomeness of this ability. The name needs to change, it's not really a leap because your target isn't casting it or performing the action, you are being saved.
Divine Liberation (Being pulled out of a bad situation like standing in fire or being the target of focus fire in PvP)
Deliverance (To be delivered from previously described situation)
Something along those lines.
Just some thoughts.

You're all going to be eating your words when encounters are DESIGNED around having this spell to save your whole raid's ass -- when the one guy who has to be Life Gripped away will, if he doesn't move in time, explode the whole raid or something.
You know, this is exactly the kind of thing that I'm talking about. Everybody is ripping apart all of our new skills and abilities based on our current gaming experience in WotLK. It's just not accurate to make the comparisons until we have further information on encounters and details on our actual spells.
Yes, we can relate to the spells, but to accurately gauge the USEFULNESS of the spell, we have to see it work in its environment. Which hasn't been fully designed yet.

It will be situational ability, obviously. Here are some quick scenarios, but I'm sure they've already been thought up.
1. The obvious dumb DPS standing in a fire.
2. Someone Sinespe mentioned paralytic poison and the Rotface oozes, I was thinking the exact same thing as well.
3. PvP: Pull someone who is getting focused.
4. PvP: Pull someone out of LoS of a enemy caster to buy time to bring health back up.
5. Saving a caster/melee from getting beat on by a mob temporarily to buy enough time to heal the player and/or buy time for the tank to regain threat.
6. Balance (MAYBE!): There has been an opposite for every ability so far in the game, at least from what I can think of at the moment.
AoE damage (Blizzard, Rain of Fire) and AoE Heals (Prayer of Healing, Circle of Healing)
Single target nukes (Insert a hundred abilities here), single target heals (Same thing)
Damage over Time (DoT) and Healing over Time (HoT's)
Stuns/Snares/Other Forms of CC and the dispelling of/immunity to such.
Death Grip..... wait, there isn't anything similar to this at all. For this reason alone, I believe this ability will make it to live.

Do you really believe that the dev's would design an encounter around NEEDING a priest with Life Grip?
How does that square with "Bring the player, not the <life grip>"
Would you really want to play content designed around a gimmick?
I do partially agree with you, but they have a history of changing their plans rather surreptitiously. Remember when mages were supposed to be the AoE King class? Never happened.
