Seconding what Adams said, we've made it 240 posts without having such a 'sensitive' topic locked, so lets keep this going.
Was a little shocked to see this on the front page today haha, but that article you linked is a pretty interesting one Adams. I never really thought about Trans using WoW as an 'outlet' of sorts to be able to freely be their gender. Pretty interesting!
I completely agree with what she said about how WoW allows people to explore different sides of themselves. Pretty much every character I create is in one way or another, a form of myself so it doesn't surprise me that others are doing the same at all. I find RPing is a fantastic way to explore the facets of my personality without getting me in trouble haha.
I know a male-to-female Trans that went to my highschool, and although we were never close, it was hard to get used to calling her well, her. Although I have no negative judgements based on peoples sexual orientation (Im bisexual myself) or gender identity, it was a little hard to get used to at first just because for the longest time, she was a he. Luckily our highschool really was fantastic with anti-bullying and support, so she was able to come out and be herself without too much lashback from the community.

Heh yeah, that's why I bumped it up ^_^; I thought it was an interesting read and should share it with our fellow forum mates.

Aye, it's nice to be able to let out parts of ourselves without doing things that could get us in trouble with the law, churches and so on lol =P.

That is good to hear. For those transitioning, I have a feeling I wouldn't have a real issue with that, even I had known the person for most of my life; if they want to be known as She/He I don't think it would be too hard for me to start identifying them in those terms...then again, I'm a fairly easy going person anyways, and believe in letting people be themselves lol.

I'm still not completely convinced that a female can be born into a male body, or vice versa, just from a completely biological standpoint, but I respect the right of those who identify as something other than their birth sex to be whoever they want to be. Hell, I frickin'
love
My Little Pony. I'm not going to judge someone else about
anything
so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

So I figured since this thread was revived we might as well chat about it.
I was just wondering, how do you guys decide your characters sexual orientation, history and openness?
I always find it fascinating how people build their characters, the thought and process behind it, so this is just one aspect that I'm curious as to how you guys do it and why. (:

I would be more curious on how diffrent societies would view homosexualy etc.

(:Being straight myself, I generally don't deviate from that template, except very deliberately. To date, I think Taelani is my only homosexual character (at least, the only one that has been in a homosexual relationship, though she's more asexual than anything).

Really depends on the character I suppose; Kali's depraved *!@# anything that moves orientation slowly came about the more insane she went.
Tae was a good chance to add in a bi-sexual character, without making the character just about his sexuality.
Honestly, it's just one more feature of what the character is to me heh.

All of my characters are heterosexual, same as me, or asexual (typically my undead ones), given the type of character. It's just easier to write them like that, and the orientation of my characters pretty much never comes into play anyway...
Well, there was that ONE RP, but we will never speak of those events again...

This, really. So far I only have one homosexual, who's little more than yet another joke at the Twilight franchise.
And of course I have Cyrus, who will do anything that moves; what doesn't move, he sets into motion with fel sorcery, first.

With my characters it's pretty fun to pick out stuff like this. I have gay, straight, bisexual, polysexual and asexual characters. They are all pretty different in their openness and promiscuous..ness... haha, even if their sexual orientation is the same.

Can't believe I just found this out, but apparently there is now an
explicitly gay
character
in WoW now.
Granted, it's just in a Steamy Romance Novel, but I think it's worth noting that it was mentioned very casually, rather than being the focus of the story. To me, that lends credibility that it's something more than just smut.
And come on, it's more confirmation than
any
of
the
other
suspected bi/homosexual characters got. :P

Well ... Since we were speaking RP-characters ...
I'm bisexual IRL, and all my characters reflect that in some way.
My RP-main, Tamarra, is a former Quel'Dorei; now living death knight; who was married and have kids, but she prefers the company of her succubi to any other, even though she certainly sleeps with everything that moves if she gets the chance.
My old main, Sineira, is a draenei who's technically a &*!@#, except her payment is usually the enjoyment she gets, she would also sleep with anything moving.
Tammy, a young Quel'Dorei huntress is in a relationship with another woman, and though she does enjoy sex with males as well, she prefers women.
Mithril is a little theif, and this far she doesn't even quite know what sex is, but she have feelings for another woman.
Then we have my San'layn, who will ^&*! anything as long as she gets to bite it.

My small case of
GID
has lead to some interesting oddities in my character's sexualities.
Asylu, Draenei hunter and my former main, is more or less lesbian, it has less to do with gender and more to do with an attraction to Human females. They're so much smaller than Draenei.
Korrinal, Draenei paladin and new main, is actually asexual. She has no time to devote to the pursuit of love in the physical sense, but she does have a bit of courtly love for a female priest.
Meallyar, Blood Elf DK and main RP character, has a twisted love for his deceased sister who's soul lives in his runeblade and is gay because the only person he's ever shown sexual attraction for is a male Blood Elf hunter that he...well... ravished for lack of a better word. He seems to find fighting and killing to be far more intimate than sex...I guess that makes him a sadist.
Sehanine, Blood Elf hunter, is hard to describe. If practical could be a sexual orientation, that would be her's. She views sex as a way to relieve pressure and really has no defined preference outside of willing partner.
Hanron, my Tauren druid, is actually heterosexual. Just a little unlucky in love. He is currently head over heels in love with another druid whom he met while roaming around in cat form. It's a shame she's a Night Elf...

Interesting! Here's a few of my characters to add to the list. I started writing this and it was waaaay too long so I'm just going to point form it. xD
Praey (troll priestess): Polysexual, just wants to have fun. Will do anything and anyone as long as they are attractive. Has slept with so many people I've lost count haha.
Llynarai (blood elf hunter): Straight, but uninterested in any type of relationship due to the two people she truely had feelings for breaking her heart. Way too untrusting. Has had a few sexual partners just to relieve tension.
Ja'ak (half-troll/night elf priest): Gay but has not come out to anyone other than parents. Already deals with bullying and does not want it to escalate.
Ashiena (troll hunter): Straight, only had one partner and interest. Had a 'come and go' type relationship that was very casual but when he wanted to commit more she couldn't handle it and bolted.
Zane (troll rogue): Asexual. Went through a lot of sexual and emotional abuse from his stepfather as a child and is disgusted by the thought of a physical relationship of any kind. Might be able to bond emotionally with someone.
Nuhm (blood elf warlock): Straight, but a little curious. Will hit on every female he sees, so he's bound to be successful every once in a while. Has a very close relationship with Praey but they are not IN a relationship.
Vivica (human priest): Straight (I think?), has had no partners of any kind. She was raised in a very strict house and is pretty innocent when it comes to this stuff. I can see her rebelling in the future.
Av'ka (troll druid): Bisexual, but is life-mates with Tova, a night elf druid. She is very open and natural about sex.
Tza'tali (troll shaman): Straight, but at her oldest point in the timeline she doesn't really have any interest in sex. She has had two lifemates, both of which were killed (one protecting her, the other in the battle against Deathwing).
Okay I have so many more characters but this is long enough as it is haha. As you can see I have quite the range of characters I think..
