The Xbox thread was locked on a request from the user who made it; his questions were answered, and he didn't need the thread anymore.
The Barack thread was locked because Daddyflex is a troll; read any of his threads/post, hell he put up one about size of penis'es, and circumvented the censor to do it.... er nvm, that word doesn't get censored... which is strange.
The FBomb thread descended into hate against Elaus, which is what happens to his threads, same with the 'New Video Game' thread; no point in keeping open threads that just turn into flame wars.

1) So OP's "own" the thread now? Or was it just an excuse for the moderator to do some work. Just like the eager secretary thrilled at the prospect of fetching her boss coffee.Yes they do; they made the topic, and they can request it to be locked if they want.
2) Hard to believe considering this forum uses the word troll as pretty much a broad insult towards anybody they dont like.Look through his threads, look through his comments; every one of them is designed to be either troll bait or flame war creation.
3) Thread above did not turn into an elaus hate thread. But anyways, sling a bit of mud and the thread is locked? My point exactly. The Hail Satan post was locked because the mods do not like threads that are merely used to show a post count number. Randomness is not a place for just insane and useless posts which was what the Math question and the Future of Trade chat were. I'm not sure why the SNES thread was locked, probably because Elaus created it and walked away, didn't respond to it, and just let it go. How about you read the locked threads you post, and remember there are rules to Randomness.

I can go on FOREVER. There an average of about 10 locked threads on each page...and Im not exaggerating go check for yourself Moderators really need something better to do. I visit lots of forums and I have never ever seen the sheer number of locks as I do in this forum. These are far more "serious" forums than this and even they have less moderation... fyi some of those that I visit are forums.studentdoctor.net or offtopic.net... none of these sites have paid moderators and they facilitate far better discussions than this board filled with a bunch of bored moderators who sit in front of their computer refreshing the site every 10 minutes only to see 5 new threads a day which they scrutinize with a microscope.
Could also be the average Randomness poster requires more moderation than the average whatever forum you visit poster does.

Just to be clear, none of our moderators are paid employees--they're all volunteers. The admins and bureaucrats are paid employees, some of them part time and some of them full time.
Also, please note that this was true at the time of posting, but is not a hard and fast rule. Making someone a bureaucrat, for instance, doesn't necessarily mean we've hired them.
We are human beings, and we do make mistakes. We try to make Randomness a fun place to be, and most of that comes from the intuition of the mods themselves. We do have rules, but the mod team always uses their best judgement to determine the right course of action. That's why we make it so easy for you to bring threads to MY attention, so I can evaluate whether the mods are on track.
In general, our policy is this, in order of "how likely the thread is to be moderated":
Porn spam > Gold spam > other advertising > flame wars > forum games > pointless threads.
That's an oversimplification, and it doesn't hold true for ALL forums, but you get the idea.

Porn spam > Gold spam > other advertising > flame wars > forum games > pointless threads.
So there is no moderation of threads citing 'detracts from level of actual conversation' in Randomness? Or is that a part of pointless threads? In other words, are the mods comfortable with a page full of one word or half sentence threads, or +1 forum games per (completely obscured) each remotely interesting topic? Do you think this is an environment that 'encourages a conversation'? Do you think the goal of one word or half sentence threads, and +1 forum games is to 'encourage a conversation'? If so, do you think those threads honestly achieve that goal?
The purpose of a post should be to
encourage a conversation
, and threads that are not in line with that criteria will be locked or deleted—regardless of whether it's because they don't make any sense, or whether it's because they were never intended as conversations.
I truly feel the moderation has failed to live up to this stipulation in the rules at the top of the randomness forums, and that the quality of the board suffers for it.
And actually, here's another rule in that same thread which I feel more directly applies to post count/e-peen forum games:
Posts that are intended for some purpose OTHER than conversation will be locked or deleted. Don't post threads if you don't want to have a conversation on the topic.
If a person is simply posting in a thread - or if the whole purpose of the thread is - to raise post counts, would you agree that the purpose of that post or thread is something other than conversation? If so, do you still feel that those threads or posts deserve to be locked or deleted? If not, at least change the stipulated rules at the top of the forums. At the very least I'd like to feel at the end of this discussion that the moderation style is appropriate to the stated goals and rules of the forum. At the moment there are platitudes about enforcing things which are at least an attempt at conversation, but in reality anything that isn't against
directly
in conflict with the overarching Wowhead guidelines (with the exception of the 'do not spam' stipulation) is acceptable in these forums.

It's also true that most (if not all) of the moderators 'fear' (hate) moderating Randomness above all other forums.

@ Malgayne, just while it occurs to me...
I've raised the question in the Site Feedback forum about mods locking and deleting threads, and letting the users know why, but didn't get a response.
Specifically - under what circumstances will a mod delete a thread, relative to locking a thread and providing a reason? The deleted threads typically don't contain any different material to the locked ones, so it's difficult to understand.
Edit: Oh wait, never mind, I did get a reply. Apologies :)

The only thing I have against Elaus' threads are the excessive number of them. I don't mind them if taken individually. A "what is your favorite muffin" thread, if taken seriously, can have responses of favorite recipes and the like. In fact, it might have had more discussion than a political, philosophical, or economic debate thread because more people can give their input without it going over their heads.
This is also true...
Whats your favorite muffin?
Whats your favorite icee?
Whats the worst smell?
.... it gets tireing.
