The most common problems I would say that we encounter in this forum are "Rotation" (which I put in quotes), Proper GEAR/Gemming, and addons that help with maintaining your DoT's in a timely manner.
So. Referring to a boss fight:
"Rotation":
"Rotation" for a shadow priest is really more of a set of directives than it is rotation. I'm carefully choosing not to say "priority list" because this is trite and not necessarily accurate. There ARE priorities, but different situations will call for a different spell sequences. You want to maintain your DoTs first and foremost. VT and DP are extremely important to keep rolling at all times on your primary target. SW:P will be refreshed by itself usually and will have to be manually re-applied least often. You can cast VT + SW:P on secondary targets if you want.
Never EVER Clip your DoT's.
You can get MORE damage output from casting another Mind Flay and then refreshing your DoTs than clipping your DoT by 0.5 seconds. The DoT falling off for 1.5 or even 2 seconds is justified by your Mind Flay and re-application of the DoTs AFTER you finish casting your MF.
Mind Blast is to be used on every cooldown, except when it interferes with the re-application of your two important DoT's or the target won't live long enough, so your continued Mind Flay spam should be sufficient.
Mind Flay will be used between MB cooldowns and should NEVER be clipped for re-application of DoTs or to hit MB straight off the CD.
Clipping your MF can be incredibly detrimental to your resulting DPS.
Shadow Word: Death is not commonly used in rotations as it is usually a DECREASE in DPS, but can be used while making positioning adjustments (moving).
Your Single Target Damage from spells should go in this order:
MF
VT
DP
SW:P
Where there are Multiple targets, your VT should overtake your MF, or your Mind SEAR should be #1.
Gear/Gemming:
You don't want to talk about this anyway. There are myriads of threads on this topic.
Addons:
Every player has their addons of choice. I really like Quartz + XPerl for my raid frames + DoT management. XPerl enlarges your own DoT's and their timers so you know exactly how much time is left on each spell and when to re-apply. You can plan ahead as well. For instance, the timers may read 2 seconds on DP, 4 seconds on VT while I'm casting my Mind Flay. I'll know that once my MF is done in just over 2 seconds, that I'll cast my DP and after GCD, I'll have exactly enough time to hit off my VT so that I don't clip that either.
Personally, I really like using my XPerl DoT Timing, though there are really excellent addons that others have reported using. They can chime in if they like.

Listen to Oscar.
ForteXorcist and/or Event Horizon are decent mods for keeping track of your DoTs and when you should be refreshing them. Quartz is great because it takes your latency into consideration and shows you when it's safe to start casting your next spell, allowing you to cut down on those fractions of a second of pseudo-downtime between casts.

That's really interesting Starjl I'd really want to know how it is that your DPS actually increases with a mind-flay clip. Perhaps it's a lag issue where it APPEARS that you clip the MF, but you're actually casting more seamlessly? That's all I can think of... haha!
What kind of latency are you running with?

The latest version of Quartz now marks the ticks for spells like MF and warlock Drainsoul. Very nice feature.
Yes! I noticed this and really do like it as well! Excellent addition to the mod!

How do I make that display a GCD bar like Quartz does?

Create a new cast bar, and for "unit" select "gcd."

I'll run some experiments on dummies myself sometime when I have a minute. That's really interesting. Wonder what Sinespe would have to say about this?

To add, spriest dps I found was very rhythmic. Once you figured out the flow you stopped clipping DoT's and everything is timed perfectly.
To be more relevant to the the thread-in heroics, bosses will tend to not have enough health for you to fully dps them(at least the pre-ICC heroic ones). The bosses in my heroic runs tend to die in less than 40 seconds.

This is untrue I've proven in another thread that you can punch up to or over 5k dps in under 20 seconds in ilvl 245 gear.
