I've been heroic LFDing for more than a month now and I've never done Oculus, so I've no idea what all the fuss is about...
The only issue I've found with the system is the difference between tank/healer and DPS queues, and theres very little Blizz can do about that, and it's a minor fault at worst.

WTB fix to Vote Kick. Had a DTK today and we basically 4-manned it because a hunter stayed one-pack behind us, looting and skinning but hardly attacking at all. We kept complaining in Party to each other about it, telling the guy to just leave if he wasn't going to participate. We ended up stopping two-packs from the last boss until the 15 minute timer cleared so we could kick him. At least he didn't get the bonus badges or loot from the last boss, but still. It's SO frustrating knowing that there's nothing you can do to this guy, other than sitting at the start for 15 minutes so you can kick him without rewarding him at all.

Why wait for the timer to clear? Or does the vote reset the timer? I would have booted him anyway, and then spent 15 minutes organizing my bank or something.

Um... because you can't kick anyone for the first 15 minutes after you enter an instance. I'd like that time reduced to 5 minute or even less. Most heroics don't even take 15 minutes to complete anymore.

I only ever tanked the LFD, and I gotta say when I started tanking instances started as "OMG tank only has 22k hp, we're going to fail" and ended as "BEST TANK EVAR!".
To say this boosted my ego a little bit, well, yes, yes it did.
That having been said, I think my least favorite part of the LFD tool would be the part I never used - queuing as heals or DPS and playing tank lotto. From all the griping I heard about FailTanks, DPS queuing as tank to get past the queues, and in general Bad Stuff, I just don't think I could handle either of those other two roles. As long as my healer was semicompetent, I could faceroll my way through most stuff, but given what happened when I made an oops (it happens to the best of us) I cringe to imagine what other people have been subjected to.
I think the biggest change that Blizzard could make that would improve the LFD tool would be to require for heroics that in order to sign up as a tank, your DEF has to be 535 or greater, and that in order to sign up as a healer, your talents have to have a minimum of 51 points in a healing tree. (Druid: Resto, Shaman: Resto, Pally: Holy, Priest: Holy, Disc) If either of those conditions change, the party is alerted, and you have the option to be booted immediately, no 15 minute timeout required. It wouldn't fix all the issues, but it would help...

EDIT: the only reason i dont like that ALL heroics implement a gear score, D capped, or other requirement, is that it excludes too many.Yeah, I'm not saying "implement a gear score requirement for all heroics" - in fact, I think that's an epically bad idea. What I am saying is that if you're not 535 def capped (something you can do without setting foot inside a heroic via
stuff you can buy straight off the AH
- I did it day 1 I dinged 80 with a new toon on a new server, although I'd filled it in with some quest loot as well) then you shouldn't be allowed to sign up as a tank role for the LFD. You can still queue as DPS. And for healers, I'm not saying you need to have 232 purps in every slot, you just need to have 51 points in a healing spec. If you don't, queue as DPS, and you'll still get in.
It could even be used as a player education tool - have the "Tank" and the "Healer" boxes grayed out with a tooltip that reads "Must have at least 535 defense to queue as tank" or "Must have 51 talent points in <Restoration/Holy/Holy or Discipline> to queue as healer". It's not exclusionary (people can still run heroics as DPS, they just can't tank or heal them without meeting some very basic requirements) and it would bring up the quality of the experience, at least in my opinion.
Edit: I think some of the problem with failbad tanks is that many of them don't KNOW about the defense minimum. There is nowhere in game where it tells you that not having a 535/540 defense is a REALLY good idea. By putting it as a bar (that they can get around by dragging four other unsuspecting souls directly to the dungeon in question) it gives those who want to tank something to work towards, and some guidance.

Healers nowadays can easily heal heroics with hybid dps/healing specs that don't have 51 points in a healing tree.

Wow, someone admitting on here they made a mistake. (It's me that made it)
The link I posted to the collection of items didn't actually def cap the individual. I threw together a quick set that does, only resorting to one crafted purple (the necklace)
here
