I think there is one thing left to consider... why would anyone be able to commune with the spirits of Frostmourne during the Halls of Reflection encounter? Has anyone ever considered that only the Lich King can even see those souls?
"But how did Sylvanas/Jaina see Uther's soul?"
It was a projection by the Lich King himself. I don't think he would be foolish enough to leave his blade alone for anyone to take it: it was bait. He had this projection of Uther say that whole "There must be a Lich King" speach because it is what he wants. If the followers of Tirion take him down, he wants someone to take up the helm and blade. He will then devour that soul (he doesn't want someone taking over him) and become even more deadly. If he takes a new soul, that would require us to do the whole boss fight all over again.
It doesn't look like Blizzard made a retcon, it looks like the Lich King set up a trap.
*obligatory Admiral Ackbar ASCII art*
"Its a trap!"
Anyways, did you consider at all that Jaina Proudmoore is the most powerful mage on Azeroth, and knows all types of magic and can manipulate almost all of them to a small degree? And that Uther's holy power is so strong that he could possibly break free of frostmourne for a short time?

This guy!
This.
No one knows sacrifice like Darion Mograine ...were talking about the man who commited suicide with the Ashbringer to try and purify the blade and free his fathers spirit.
It will be him.
Thrall...pfff, thats cute.

Just because Jaina is one of the most powerful mages in the world does not mean she knows anything on how to commune with souls or necromancy (or Sylvanas for that matter).
Plus, I thought she was trying to commune with the magics of the blade itself.
And we don't know enough about Frostmourne to claim that Uther can break from it with the Light.
Right, so why don't we just dismiss all of it as dribble because all reasonable explanations get turned on there heads then.

That still makes no sense.. why is Uther in the blade? If you play the mission/read the chapter about Arthas going for the urn to keep Kel'Thuzad from rotting into nothing, he just murders his mentor and the paladins with him, picks up the urn, dumps out his father's ashes then leaves. If he had stolen Uther's soul at that point... wouldn't he have played with it a little while he was on the move, like he did to Sylvanas?

Maybe he didn't hate Uther as much as sylvanas. A small part may have kept compassion for his old teacher, and Sylvanas actively resisted him throughout her entire life knowing him, living and dead.

I personally think it would be really awesome if during the fight (Mabye halfway) the Lich King freezes everybody and as a last attempt (a cutscene would pop up) it would show him releasing the scourge all over Azeroth and you see giant mobs of scourge everywhere killing everything!
Then you have to finish him off as quick as possible. At the very end, Darion Mograine says something along the lines of," It is time to finish this, I will take the roll of the Lich King. *Grabs the Lich King's helmet and put's it on* *Does some sort of huge spell and then another cutscene appears* In the cutscene scourge suddenly stop and die (with the exception of some that run back over to Icecrown. Shows all the races cheering... but then suddenly out of nowhere, the ground starts to shake and then all the Deathwing stuff happens.
The heroes of Azeroth return to find their home in ruin and destruction...
*Lol sorry I made so long XD*
Hah, i like it, needs some editing but great nonetheless lol. Great premise lol.
I like the last part ...no rest lol. I would love to see the city of Stormwind cracked in half.

I strongly belive that the new Lich King will be Garrosh.
As Thrall leaves to help the newly devasted Azeroth(i think who said he'll help Malfurion to kick Ragnaros ass is right),the new Warchief (Garrosh)being a completly bad leader, will declare war to the Alliance, and by excluding almost all the other races from Orgrimmar, and by doing any other stupid thing, will lead the Horde ,once again,to the dark, savage faction it once was.
So i think either Saurfang(who said himself will kill Garrosh if he makes same errors as his father)or Varian(really pist off)will kill this brown orc.
As his soul thirts for power,we have a new Lich King.
According the lore, the Lich King,is Arthas only. After his heart was destroyed by Tirion, all humanity in Arthas is dead, but the prince has tasted the power, and he wants it only for himself.
As he stated:"
No we. No one tells me what to do. I've got everything I need from you -- now the power is mine and mine alone. Now there is only I. I am the Lich King. And I am ready.
"
I'm pretty sure Ner'zhul is in Frostmourne(btw the spirits inthere are having a party?)and Arthas will be dead,as Garrosh takes his place.
About Cairne,is seems he's dissapering in The Cataclysm.
It speculate he'd be killed by Garrosh, but is a screenshot in wich Thrall and Cairne are aiding some chilldrens,so i think he's either with Thrall, either in some place of Azeroth helping Cataclysm's victims.
