Determining a pet for leveling

Ok, I'm working on my hunter. I'm beast mastery for leveling and need to figure out what kind of pet I want. I've had a bear since 45ish, now 61, and a wolf before that when I was Surv. I would like to see what other pets are like.
Are there any pets that have useful abilities for leveling as well as periodic BGs? Preferably one that I would also take into instances without switching out for my wolf.

For a tenacity pet, you can stay with the bear or get a gorilla, I think gorillas have a talent you can spec into that generates extra threat (besides Thunderstomp). For a cunning pet, a wind serpent seems good because it has a ranged attack (pulls aggro from far away). I leveled 10-80 using a cat, then switched to a wolf for the furious howl buff. I found that there isn't too much of a difference in pets when I went through outlands, but when you get to Northrend you will want to have a pet that generates threat better. Whatever you want to do, try out different pets and see which one fits best for you.

Crab all the way to 80 ! At the end you have the best Tank and PVP pet (imo) !
For raid you can tame wolf lvl 80 in Storm Peaks.

Cunning pets were designed (I think) to be not only the best PvP pets, but to be the best all-around pets (good at tanking, good at damage-dealing, etc.). And so far, I've found this to be true. My hunter's only level 28, but since level 10 I've been leveling with a ravager, and it's been a great pet. It keeps threat pretty well, it does a decent amount of damage, and
Ravage
has been a lifesaver in BGs (and in WSG, is particularly good at stunning the flag carriers before they get out of the room).
I also have a bear and have used it a little bit, but I'm more attached to my ravager because of its all-around utility. Plus it looks cooler.

Use This spec:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#cVbhzxgRiuheot0eVbo:fViMz
and get a Wolf and spec it like this:
http://www.wowhead.com/?petcalc#0czc0f00zhkRb
Reasons why wolf:
-U get 2 AP buffs for u and ur pet(1 talented and 1 "racial")
-Does more damage than cat(tested!), havent tested devilsaur since if u are dual specced, u can use wolf as ur MM/Surv pet too
-More useful in 5-man dungeons which I belive u do while leveling.
Leveling tips:
-
Use Viper all the time
, the mobs should go down fast enough if u follow the rotation I used, Arcane > SS > Steady > Concussive > Steady(Steady shot does double damage when used after Concussive shot) > Arcane > Steady > Multi Shot(Switch this with Aimed after u get it, or use on groups of 2-3 for good dmg). The burst damage is good and ur pet will maintain the aggro(sometimes u can get aggroed if u use dragon/hawk)
- I do not recommend dropping Bestial wrath on every 2nd-5th fight, It's just wasting, the mob will go down fast enough without the boost from BW.
- If u see a quest that would require 2 or 3 players to do it, SOLO IT, It's so easy to do with Hunters, keep ur Mend Pet on and just fire away the rotation I wrote.
That is all the things I can give to u to assist u with leveling to 80s.
Hope this helped u a bit to lvl faster and safer.

Lvl 62 atm,
I ran with a Raptor for my mid lvls. No problem for me there.
Lately tamed a Bear & a Wolf to mess around with.
Really like both the Bear & the Wolf.
Have done some sticky "Kill such & such Elite mob" with the bear & the Wolf lately,
Last night for example I did both
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9817
&
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9730
solo with the bear as tank. Leader of the Darkcrest, was a nasty finish but I won. Bear(I think he was lvl 62 at the time) ended up dying with main mob at 500hps. Needless to say I wedged out a victory on both with no resets or self wipe.
The Raptor is a nice pet if you wish something Different than a Wolf. But I think you'll swap back to the Wolf after a while :). Bad thing about the Raptor is his special is a bleed. Wont help if you need to CC the mob.
My Build is pretty much cookie cutter, Op. But covers most things correctly, I think :)
You can check my Build & pet builds in my Sig if wished.
Good Luck Bud.
edit: My next big test is
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10132
, I need a new crossbow:) But I think I may need aid on this one. Last time I did it on my Pali, it was nasty then.

I wouldn't try to get a pet that fits PvE tanking, PvE Dps, and PvP. Get 3 totally different pets and use them each for their specific purpose. Trying to mix and match just doesn't work.
For PvE tanking, I used a bear up until level 60. I have since switched to a
warp stalker
and have never looked back. They hold aggro very well, have a very unique and useful charge type ability, deal nice damage, and can tank most groups of mobs. I have yet to find a better tank pet with its flexibility and awsomeness.
For a PvE dps pet, stick with your wolf. If you dual spec Surv, use a wolf when you run instances. Nuff said.
For PvP, I would go with either a Spider pet or a Crab pet. Both have root type abilities that are useful for kiting and keeping your opponents at a distance. The Spider's root is ranged, where the crap is channeled. The crab can withstand more punishment than the spider though.
Its pretty easy to stable pets in and out for pvp. Also its pretty easy to tame new pets now and I personally would keep at least one of each 3. If there was only a really good tank pet that's exotic, I haven't found a better one than either a bear, croc, or the warp stalker.

Hunter dps pets
Wolf
boosts the pet's damage slightly and more importantly your own
Devilsaur
deals the most dps of all pets
Hunter tank pets
Bear
swipes all enemies in a frontal cone, good for both quick or drawn out multi target pet tanking
Crocalisk
good for quick pet tanking on any number of small, fast striking mobs
Turtle
unparalleled single target elite tanking pet
Hunter utility pets
Worm
when there isn't a warrior or rogue
Wasp
when there isn't a druid and allowing a warlock to deal more dps
Sporebat
when a druid or warlock can't be bothered to apply theirs to every mob in a melee heavy group
Serpant
allowing a mage, warlock, or rogue to deal more dps where a spell slow is needed
Core Hound
allowing a mage, warlock, or rogue to deal more dps where a spell slow is needed
Carrion Bird
allowing warlocks, paladins, warriors, and bears to deal more dps and spec into more valuable talents
Turtle
combined with
RoS
to help mitigate a large hit on someone
Tallstrider
reducing the incoming damage on large pulls and potentially on bosses (need more testing from the hunter community)

I feel like using Viper all the time would be pretty boring and slow, why not just switch to viper between fights, when on mounts and as necessary if your grinding down a bunch of mobs?
U dont have to do the change after each fight, thats why, u are an unstoppable killing machine ;), U cant go OOM
