HiVolt
Alright, I have a question that I haven't come across yet in this thread. I may have overlooked it, please refer me to the answer if I have.
I know that there are two distinct groups within Islam, the Sunni and the Shiites. I know that the difference in belief is that the Sunni hold that all of the four caliphs rightfully took the Prophet's place as the leaders of the Muslims, while the Shiite hold that only the decendants of Ali, the last of the four caliphs are the Prohpet's rightful successors.
But what I don't know, is if there are any other philosophical differences between the two groups. Are there any differences other than whom the successors of the Prophet were, and what would they be specifically?

Well thank you for clarifying what you could. I think I'm going to have to read up on the roles of the Imams in Islam, so I can understand the implications of the belief you mentioned.
And I'm sorry if I used the incorrect spelling of Shi'a, I was just going by what I had read in my World History book from 9th grade.

It's alright, there are many ways of correctly spelling it ;P.
The best source for information would be person to person, talking to a Shaikh (equivalent to a Priest) would be the best person to talk to, but again, if you can ;P. Almost all of the ones that I have met have been really down to Earth people and are very easy to approach.
Well, I would, but I don't know of any mosques near where I live. I would probably have to drive for a few hours to find one, and even then I'd be hesitant to approach a Shaikh because I'm an atheist.

Shaikhs are supposed to be peaceful so don't worry s/he (though most are men) will be happy at a chance to guide you to Islam and if your in america there are mosques everywhere just google or ask a Muslim acquaintance
Oh, make no mistake, I'm wanting to convert or anything. I'm perfectly happy as an atheist. I've just been flipping through my old textbook and I found that little part on Islam; so I wanted to see if my question had been answered. It wasn't, so I asked. I just say I wouldn't want to approach a shaikh or anything because I wouldn't want to offend him with anything I say. I never want to appear to be offensive to another person because of his or her religion, and especially so if that person happens to be a priest. Also, I wouldn't want to go out of my way when I could just buy a translated version of the Quran and interpret some of the distinctions on my own.
But, this seems a little off-topic...
