Take AP over all else?

Hi, the stickies seem to suggest that for a BM hunter, take hit (to cap)>AP>everything else. While I understand that AP is important for both the hunter and pet, there's gotta be a point where this reasoning breaks down. For example, you wouldn't throw away 25 crit rating on an older item just to take an ug that has +5 AP right?
So what's the balancing point? Is there a weighting for stats for hunters that might suggest how much AP is worth throwing out crit or ArP or AGL?
Thanks!

It's talking about gemming and enchanting, not the stats on gear. You're not going to pass up on a pair of 226 boots because they less have AP than the 213's you're wearing if you gain more of everything else. The reason that you gem & enchant for AP as BM is because it transfers to your pet and since your pet is 50-55% of your dps as BM, you want as much AP as possible. 1 Agility is 1 AP, but when gemming & enchanting you get 2AP for every 1 Agi in itemization points.
Let's say you have
Boots of Living Scale
. MM & SV Hunters would throw two
Delicate Cardinal Ruby
in them & enchant them with
Superior Agility
creating 56 AP from gems & enchants.
As BM you would put two
Bright Cardinal Ruby
in them and enchant with
Greater Assault
creating 112 AP from gems and enchants. While the hunter is not getting the crit from the Agi & AP isn't effected by Kings, you ARE giving more DPS to your pet through raw AP which will increase your overall DPS more than Agi.

It simply means that given equal itemization points, take AP over everything else. You get 2 points of AP for every 1 point of the other stats, so when choosing what gem to use, your choices are going to look like this:
40 AP, 20 Agi, 20 Crit, 20 Haste, 20 ArP etc.
So, given equal itemization points, take AP. This applies for enchants as well. You want to get Crusher on your gloves isntead of Major Agility and so forth.
But no, you wouldn't take 5 AP over 25 crit nor would you take 25 AP over 25 crit, but you would certainly take 50 AP over 25 crit (equal itemization budgets).
If you use the DPS spreadsheet you can get a pretty good idea of how much of one stat you need for it to surpass another.
