I'm not going to say that it's wrong for you to like him, that's personal opinion, but really, Garithos was not a good guy.
He ordered Kael to go on a suicide mission, and then sentenced him to be executed when he completed it.
He was very, very racist.
Saying he's a hero is like saying Korm Blackscar's a hero.
Yes, he's out there fighting the Lich King, but he's also being a huge $%^&*! and all around making his own faction look bad.

This guy has a slight point: Garithos was doing what he thought was best.
He was a madman by all definition, but he still was doing everything for Lordaeron and in the memory of King Teranas.

To your second point I say that you are omitting very important facts. They were fighting a losing war, every mission was a suicide mission. Garithos' mission to save Lordaeron was a suicide mission, infact he died trying. But he specifically left Kael to be killed because he was an elf.
I don't have Wowwiki access atm, but I'm also fairly certain that he says “The only good non-human is a dead non-human.”
He was an a**hole.
And to your third point I would say that your comparison is off. Garithos wasn't the one betraying Sylvanas and he wasn't randomly attacking blood elves with surprize attacks. They commited crimes and he sentanced punishment. He is nothing like Korm Blackscar, he even gave Kael a second chance after he first consorted with the Naga.I am 100% certain that he would have betrayed Sylvanas had the opportunity arisen.
The Blood Elves committed no crime. The Naga were not enemies to the Alliance. The Blood Elves used what resources they had available to stay alive, and very likely help Garithos' efforts in doing so. (Imagine how much worse it would have been for him had the elves been overrun and the Scourge attacked his forces from behind).
Garithos seized this opportunity to have Kael'thas, prince of Quel'thalas, put to death.
And if you think that bigot should be honored as a hero of the Alliance... Well... That would certainly tell you something about the Alliance, wouldn't it.

Well, I'll agree that he was doing his best for what he had. He wasn't a villain and he wasn't evil.
However, I don't think he should be call a hero either.
Let's go back to your discussion on the definition of a hero:
1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.
1. He had courage and ability, as you said. However, he was not admired, and while he had some noble qualities, he also had some very poor qualities.
2. The part here to focus on is the phrase "is regarded as a model or ideal."
Garithos is not, and should not be, a rolemodel. Maybe for Aliden Perenolde (at least where racism and intolerance are concerned), but not for aspiring heroes. Nor is Garithos any sort of ideal.
He's not a villain, but he's not a hero either. At least in my opinion. I'm debated too much in the past week or so and I'm tired of it for now.

Aye, after all, just before that attack, the one that Garithos sent Kael off on, the one you seem to think he could handle it.... why did he withdraw all of the pure human forces from the Blood Elf army? It was a suicide mission, a way to get rid of the Elf so that Garthios didn't have to deal with them anymore. He wasn't a hero/an anti-hero or anything like that, Garthios was a cold bastard who only cared about reclaiming the human lands for the humans, and everything else that wasn't human could just die.

This guy has a slight point: Garithos was doing what he thought was best.
Hitler did what he did thinking it was best. Would you say the same thing about the man who order the genocide of thousends of innocents because he thought it the right thing to do?
Someone can twist the Garithos thing 3 ways from sunday, but he was and will always remain a racist bigot.
