Questions for a Catholic
Return to board index

Random question. Are there any other practicing Catholics on this board? I don't recall anyone saying they were Catholic, at least not anyone as outspoken as me.

There are a couple, I recall, but not as firm as you, I think. I seem to recall one or two saying that they were Catholic, but moved away towards a more non-denominational Christian faith.

I find that interesting, considering Catholics make up just over half of all Christians. But, then again, that percentage is lower in the US, and I guess Catholics as a whole would be less likely to be playing WoW.

That based on that wonderful crackpot youtube video from a while back that stated WoW was the work of the devil with all its spellcasting? (Joke. That video was hilarious.)
I don't recall that being a Catholic. Or maybe I'm thinking of a different one.
(Actually it's probably because Catholics tend to be from non English speaking parts of the world and this being an English only forum...

Although at only 25%, America still has the 4th largest population of Catholics in the world.

Actually, based on the amount of posting advocating religions on this site, you could probably claim that a quarter of Wowhead users are Wiccan. i.e. there probably are a large number of Catholics, they just don't post that they are.
I've actually met three other Mormons on here. I was surprised.

But it's less than 10% of Catholics in the world.
Anyway, my theory is that religion, especially Roman Catholicism, is associated with a lower socio-economic demographic (at least in Australia). The people who are more likely to be Catholic are less likely to be on a site like Wowhead (and Off-Topic specifically), due to money, time, education, etc.
Then, there's the secondary point that, for the same reasons as with that video (and no, she wasn't Catholic, she made great efforts to point out that the Catholic Church is evil too), I believe (with no statistics) that Christians generally are less likely to play WoW than non-Christians. I don't think it's that strong a correlation in this instance, but a small bias might flow on to a big bias here on the forums.

I was replying to the "English-speaking forum" explanation (and was just using America because that's where the majority are). However you look at it, though, statistically it's surprising I'm the only one. At least that I've seen.

American Catholics are
right at the national average

I was actually more concerned about the number of Christians compared to me being the only practicing Catholic I've seen. I already know about all the rest of you heathens ;)

American Catholics are right at the national average.
It demonstrates my point, if WoW players generally are above the national average, and Wowhead users are further above that (for all the reasons mentioned earlier). Looking at your graph, it shows that Christian (Mainline) and Christian (Other) both rank ahead of Catholics on an income basis (which, mind you, isn't the best indicator of
socio
economic status).
As an example, the 'average' kid in Australia would go out and kick a ball around on the weekend, they wouldn't have fantastic internet access for gaming, and as a family, they wouldn't pay $45 a month for their three kids to play WoW, because they may not afford it, or may consider such activities to be inferior compared to playing sports outside.
As for Off-Topic specifically, you can probably take a straw poll of SAT scores or other and determine that we're above average here. Those who aren't able to keep up with the others typically disappear, and don't hang around long enough to divulge their religious tendencies.
It could just be something about the way Catholic kids are brought up?

By 1% to 6%, which isn't a significan't difference. If the issue was, say, Jews, that would be a significant data set to use.

My experience is that the average practicing Catholic parent is in fact less strict and rigid than the average practicing Christian of some other denomination in regards to things like video games.

Funnily enough, I don't think we have any Jews in Off-Topic.

Do you have many Catholic friends playing WoW, relative to other religious beliefs? Honest question. The practicing Catholics that I know aren't very much gaming types, even if they do have relative freedoms (as far as strict parenting is concerned) compared to other Christians. What I mean is, I don't think it's about parental restrictions on what they can and can't do, I mean that it could be that the average Catholic is brought up in a way that just doesn't lend itself to MMO fantasy gaming.

The majority of my friends are Catholic, so my answer isn't going to tell you much. But yes, I've got, let's see... 7 Catholic friends who have played / are playing WoW, and I've got 2 Christian friends, 5 atheist/agnostic/non-religious friends, and 1 Pagan (yes, I'm friends with a practicing pagan) friend who play WoW. I think I counted everyone.

As a proportion though? For example, I probably have more Christian (including Catholic) friends than I do non-Christian friends, but a greater proportion of the non-Christian ones play.

I've got hundreds of friends....I really have no idea what the proportions are. Do I know 7/2 more Catholics than Christians? Maybe. And then I'd have to figure out where I draw the line between friend and someone I've met here and there.

I'm only guestimating, based on my knowledge of whether they do or don't play WoW (i.e. excluding all those I don't know).

Just a quick question not really related to catholicism but to all religions:
Do you people here think it's wrong that religious people such as priests has the right to come to a school and try to convince people to believe in God/Allah or alikes?
