During the same spell you just mentioned that the Aspects casts; he stood in place for the Earth Warder, but it nearly burned him out. If he becomes the new Earth Warder, he won't last for very long as a mortal is not meant to hold that power.

He tells the Aspects it was too much and wasn't something he would want to do too often; which if he steps up to the position, would mean he would always have that power within him....and again, a mortal is not meant to hold that much power.

Not to mention doing so would probably make the whole 'warchief again' thing pan out badly.

Or the power was passed onto him, similar to how Kalec gained it after the Moon thing.

To be entirely honest, it would fit entirely more with the few things we've learned about the character if he outright shows up and steals the power. Plus, it ties him in with rogues even more.

That would be interesting. Whatever happens, I'm fairly confident Thrall will not hold on to the power of the Earth Warder for long.
I think Blizzard will keep the true ending rather secretive like in WotLK by putting all the juicy details in a cinematic which won't be in the gamefiles until the official release of 4.3.
Unlike previous expansions however, I don't see Blizzard gating Dragon Soul for 3 key reasons.
1. The final boss will be tested on the PTR, which was not the case with ICC.
2. Blizzard will likely be shooting for a summer release on Expansion 4, reducing the need to drag out the Dragon Soul raid.
3. Unlike ICC and the Sunwell, which both portrayed long-term sieges. The events of Dragon Soul are incredibly fast-paced. There's not really any decent breakpoint where a significant amount of time can pass and it still makes sense.

Well, there's what happens with Malygos and what kicked off the Nexus War.

PC gamer interview with chris metzen from yesterday about thrall.
How comforting to know that it is a fact from the horse's mouth that Thrall is the author's stand in. I now have far more concern for the validity of Thrall becoming the new earth warder.
