It states clearly in the Sundering as well as the War of the Ancient books that when the Well exploded, the force of that cataclysmic energy ripped the continent of Kalimdor(which was all it was at that point) into multiple pieces and were forced apart. Where the Well had once been, due to the energies released from the Legion portal slamming shut, was a massive whirlpool, reaching down to the bottom of the ocean, and there, on the edge, lies the ruined city of Zin-Azshara, the Queen's place, and most of the Azshara coastline.

How come the highborne lose their magical power upon the destruction of the well and only recover after the creation of the new one if the destruction of the first one left a ever lasting force field of Arcane around Azeroth? They were 'addicted' to it; the Well provided 'pure' magic for them, as opposed to the filtered stuff within the field around Azeroth. It would be like drinking nothing but pure bottled spring water, then expect that person to go and drink from a river; they would do it... but it wouldn't be the same, and would probably have a different 'taste/texture' to it.

Addicted to the well or not, they weren't supposed to lose their power right?
They didn't lose it exactly, they lost the power to do the 'greater' magics, they could still do the lesser ones; but think about what happened when they tried to use the new Well at Hyjal; they created a Mage Storm that almost tore apart most of northern Kalimdor, that's why they were banished after all. I think whatever they could have done due to the Well got.... well, shattered when Magic spread across the planet, instead of being concentrated within the Well.
Think of it this way; before the Sundering, all the Worlds magic was in one place, the Well; after the Sundering, it was like all the magic was shot into the sky and came down as rain all across the planet, but as the Well was gone, there was no place for it 'pool' so they didn't have access to the same power source as before.
Hope that makes sense.

Even so, its clearly stated that they had lost all of their power... what do the novels say adam? They couldn't have lost all their power; otherwise they wouldn't have been able to summon that storm that got them banished, or survived on the long trip to what would eventually become Silvermoon and Quel'danas.

Well, it was summoned after the Second Well was created, wasn't it?
The Well at the bottom of the World Tree yeah, but it was summoned by the Highborne, trying to prove a point; that they still could use the magic without it being turned evil.... which failed.

Forget this, I misread the History of Warcraft. Your theory seems to be the truth.
The second well only brought back the desire to tap on arcane energies.
Heh no problem Delt, I know that feeling too lol.
