DPS Casters rolling on MP5 gear?

'ello,
I have a bit of an issue right now. The group I regularly raid with seems to make no differentiation between DPS casters and healers (what struck me especially was a Warlock winning
Shawl of the Caretaker
over a Disc Priest, a class that gets most of its mana from Lifetapping and recovering from it via heals anyway). I've brought this issue up with the raid leaders before stating that healers don't roll on +Hit gear and DPS casters don't roll on +MP5; anything without either stats is fair game for both.
However their response was "if it's an upgrade, it's an upgrade", and I don't think that's a sensible stance to take. MP5 might be beneficial to some casters but Healers will never benefit directly from +Hit, so we're basically getting locked out of certain gear types with such a loot system. What are your opinions on this?

If it's an upgrade then it's an upgrade. Easy as that.
Just roll on hit gear next time if it is an upgrade for you (if it has low amounts of hit and a considerably higher ilvl then what you are using this actually happens quite often) and demand to be treated like any dps.

The only item with Mp5 that a Shadow Priest, or indeed any Hybrid caster, had any claim on was the
Torch of Holy Fire
. Pre-3.1; indeed, for most people, pre Ulduar hard-modes; it was Best in Slot. This sums it up. The only mp5 gear any caster should roll on (in a sane guild, that is) would be one that is best in slot. Otherwise it's really no different than a healer rolling on hit gear. (Luckily there is no hit gear that is BiS for healers.)
The "if it's an upgrade, roll" loot policy actually
hurts
the guild, since it thins the overall benefit of the item. Any sane guild that wants to progress will ensure that every item goes to those who will receive the
most
benefit from it. Some of these decisions can be tough (just look at the way hunters and plate dps classes argue over some two-handed weapons), but that's no excuse for laziness on the part of a raid leader.

MP5 benefits warlocks because Lifetapping and Draining both nerf their dps. May I present to you
exhibit A
, which is so good it's basically required for all raiding warlocks. Yet another reason spirit >>> mp5 for our evil demon-loving shadowmage friends. Life Tap is actually a dps
boost
; mp5 is bottom of the barrel.
The point is that upgrades that used to look pretty solidly like caster dps upgrades are now good for healers and vice versa. Guilds have to come up with equitable policies to deal with awarding upgrades.Ayup. I had a rather extreme hissy fit myself many moons ago when my then-GM gave my OMG-DISC-PRIEST-
BOOTS
to a mage. Nearly up and gquit over that one. Equitable policies are surprisingly hard to come by, since few raid leaders have the cojones to make hard choices and make them with intelligence and integrity.

This attitude of a warlock taking MP5 gear and all of you who say "if it's an upgrade, it's an upgrade"... To that I say, unless you're doing that in a PUG, your guild is NOT UNITED.
Players in your guild should know and understand the benefits of the gear drops to the RAID AS A WHOLE, and not to the individual. If you have a guild full of gear w.h.o.r.e.s, I imagine your progress must be slow. It would be unthinkable to allow a DPS caster to roll on that cloak in my guild unless NO OTHER players who could use it rolls on it.
Too many players take a selfish stance to raiding and forget that there are 24 other players who helped them achieve anything they have already done.
