A hunter in my guild asked me which scope to use, and my instint was heartseeker. However, he is MM and not at the haste "soft cap". In this situation is it better to use the sun scope, or is the crit still pretty much always better and he should try to get haste other places.
To me, 40 crit is just so sweet, but I really know very little about MM

It's definitely an option, but very hard to judge if it's better or not.
My thoughts are that Crit is better until you have enough Armor Penetration to really affect Steady Shot and Auto Shots, in which case Haste is maybe better.
it's also ~0.87% Crit versus ~1.22 Haste (though not exactly with the way haste stacks).
That's also at Ulduar or better gear with at least a level 226 weapon. Less than that and I think he'd get better mileage out of Crit than Haste.
Crit also affects every shot; Haste only affects Steadies and Autos.
there is a point though where the Haste scope > Crit scope, but that's where I'd give the DPS calculator a look (

Ok thanks. He has no where near enough armor pen. So I think crit is better.
I tell everyone in guild about that site, and i use it myself, but there is no way i am gonna do the work for them :)

Really? What kind of armor pen are we talking about? 100% passive? Is it dependant on not being at the haste soft cap... ie no Improved Aspect of the Hawk?
Haste is still a total trash stat for me. The Heartseeker Scope is beating the Sun Scope by ~23 DPS in my normal MM spec.
My SV spec (without any pts in Hawk) actually showed a much smaller gap at ~13 dps.
------
I actually just tried an MM setup in the spreadsheet with 1207 passive ArPen, 142 haste + 5/5 in Hawk, and the gap was even wider at 34 DPS.
Not saying there isn't a situation where haste could surpass crit, but i think it would be pretty rare, and a good rule of thumb is always going to be to prioritize crit > haste.
