I'll quote a person's reply to this same question I hadwith using a enGB (European) client with my enUS (U.S.) client.
enGB would be making use of the EU client.
The US and EU realms are completely separate. If you wanted to have a character on an EU realm, you would have to start from scratch, with a EU account. You cannot transfer characters between the two types of realms, either.
Also, in order to play on a EU realm, you will need an EU account. You will need an account made on the European WoW site, with a key from a EU WoW client. Your US account will not be compatible with the EU realms in any way.
It used to be possible to set you client to login to the EU realms by changing a setting in your config.wtf, but it appears Blizzard has disabled this recently (as it was never supported to begin with). Hence you will need a EU client for EU realms, and a US client for US realms.
In short, if you want to play on both US and EU realms, you will need two accounts, one for the EU and one for the US, and two clients installed, one for the EU and one for the US. Hope that helps.
Probably your best course is to shop online in a Euro store that sells the Euro version and have it shipped to you (If you're staying where you're at for a while.)

You can download the client to your respectable region, when you login on the official page.
Takes a while, but way better than paying for it.

3.1 and 3.2 (the latest one) are probably the big ones.
Looking at the patch mirrors for the US version (EU version should be about the same) they look to be about 1.1GB and 1.2GB respectively. But that's for the manual patches - the Blizzard downloader should cut that down quite a bit, though I don't have hard numbers.
Good luck.

Installing Wotlk will push you to patch 3.0 as a starting point, so you'll have all prior patch content. As such, you'll only need whatever came between 3.0 and the current release.
