If you are MM or SV, and in a bad group where your pet keeps dying, it may be more useful to you to keep the pet out of action back at your character some of the time to keep the buff up. I've noticed that the wolf will still buff me even when he isn't in the fray :)

As my main is a Holy Pally (ask me in a week, it will be my Hunter again) I can honestly say that I don't heal pets in raids. Never have, probably never will. My main priority is the MT & OT, granted, the pet is getting indirect heals from
Judgement of Light
and
Glyph of Holy Light
.
On the flip side, as a Hunter, I don't "expect" my healers to directly heal my pet. It's not feasible.
MY
pet is
MY
responsibility. I would rather my pet die than an actual DPS or a Tank (if it came down to it). If I can't keep my pet alive then I fail. On Heigan, for instance, I keep the pet on the stage with me so I can still utilize
Focused Fire
,
Call of the Wild
&
Furious Howl
.

I like to use Glyph of Mending and putting 2 points into the Beast Mastery talent Spirit Bond. It makes Mend Pet worth while. If you have your tenacity pet out for long bosses you could spec your pet into the Blood of the Rhino talent. Your would have a pet that could take damage like s sponge. Imagine how long a turtle with Shell Shield up would last.
